What the Halo Keypad is
The Kwikset Halo Keypad is a Wi-Fi deadbolt with a keypad, a motorized bolt and a SmartKey keyed backup. This listing's model number is 938WIFIKYPD-15S in Satin Nickel, with part number 99380-001. Kwikset's product page shows the Satin Nickel Halo Keypad as 938 WIFI KYPD 15, without the listing's final S, and we did not match the listing's part number or UPC to a Kwikset document.
Kwikset says no smart home hub is needed and that the Kwikset app works from anywhere with an internet connection. Its specifications list four AA batteries included and two keys. Kwikset also states that its app-compatible products only work in the United States and Canada.
Door fit and the thick-door kit
Kwikset's specifications give a minimum door thickness of 1-3/8 inches and a maximum of 2 inches, with an adjustable backset. The troubleshooting guide says the Halo Keypad supports 1-3/8 to 2 inch (35 to 51 mm) doors and is compatible with 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) and 2-1/8 inch (54 mm) door holes.
For doors between 2 and 2-1/4 inches thick, the guide says a thick door kit, part 83033, is available by calling Kwikset support. Its jam-error section says the strike pocket should be at least 1 inch (25 mm) deep. We do not reproduce installation steps.
Wi-Fi requirements and Bluetooth
The troubleshooting guide states that the home Wi-Fi network must be 2.4 GHz and password protected with WPA2. It adds that some features are only available over Bluetooth.
The guide says that changing the Wi-Fi network requires a factory reset, which deletes Wi-Fi settings, user associations, settings, access codes and history. Among the causes it lists for frequent battery replacement are door misalignment and weak Wi-Fi, and it suggests a mesh network.
Codes, alerts and keypad features
Kwikset lists up to 250 custom user codes, which can be set for any time, a date range, set weekdays and times, or one use within 24 hours. The app shows lock activity including manual key entries and low battery warnings, and sends notifications.
Kwikset lists one-touch locking, a code alarm after 3 incorrect codes, a secure mode, a tamper-resistant interior cover and low battery alerts, and the guide says the keypad flashes red with fast beeping when batteries are low. Kwikset's page lists compatibility with Alexa, Google Home and Brilliant.
Ratings and size
Kwikset's specifications list ANSI grade AAA, a 20-minute UL rating, SmartKey, Microban and a metal body. The product page describes the lock as BHMA certified. We report these ratings as Kwikset states them and do not interpret them.
Kwikset gives the assembled lock as 5.4 inches high, 2.8 inches wide and 1.2 inches long. The listing's dimensions of 10.5 by 5.8 by 4.6 inches are larger; neither source explains the difference.
Warranty
The listing's warranty field reads lifetime mechanical and finish, 1 year electronics. Neither Kwikset's product page nor the troubleshooting guide we read states warranty terms, and we did not read Kwikset's warranty page.
