Fit and limits

Strengths

  • Max Crisp gives a 450 F setting aimed at prepackaged frozen foods
  • Basket and crisper plate can go in the dishwasher; the plate has two height positions
  • SharkNinja prints capacity figures and the guide prints each function's temperature ceiling

Caveats

  • Only Max Crisp reaches 450 F, at a fixed temperature; Air Fry and the rest stop at 400 F
  • The AF181 guide gives no clearance distance in inches, only adequate space on all sides
  • No mid-level rack in SharkNinja's box list, though the guide mentions one for dehydrating

One 6.5-quart basket, six functions, two names

SharkNinja's page prints Model AF181 and calls it the Ninja Air Fryer Pro XL, headed Ninja 6.5-QT Air Fryer Pro. SharkNinja's AF181 page shows that model in Black, while the Amazon title calls it an Air Fryer XL with MaxCrisp in Grey. SharkNinja's support article lists AF181GY among the SKUs its AF181 owner's guide covers; check the colour on the listing before you buy.

The six functions are Max Crisp, Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Reheat and Dehydrate. SharkNinja's box list is the 6.5-quart nonstick basket, the crisper plate and 20 chef-inspired recipes; the listing also mentions cooking charts.

SharkNinja says the basket and crisper plate fit up to 5 pounds of French fries or 9 pounds of chicken wings. That is SharkNinja's capacity claim; the owner's guide warns separately against overfilling and against letting food touch the heating element.

Only Max Crisp reaches 450 degrees

The listing and SharkNinja's page both lead with up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The owner's guide's troubleshooting page says the maximum is 450 degrees for Max Crisp and Air Broil and 400 degrees for all other functions. Air Broil is not among the AF181's six functions, so on this model only Max Crisp reaches 450, and Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Reheat and Dehydrate stop at 400.

Max Crisp runs at a fixed default temperature that cannot be adjusted; only its time can be set. The guide recommends it for prepackaged frozen foods such as French fries or chicken nuggets, and says whether to defrost other frozen foods depends on the package instructions.

The guide recommends a 3-minute preheat before adding food for Max Crisp, Air Fry, Roast and Bake, and suggests the built-in timer for it. It also mentions an Air Broil function and a broil rack as not included on all models; neither appears in the AF181's function list or SharkNinja's box list.

Crisper plate positions and dehydrating in two layers

The crisper plate sits in an upper or lower position. The guide says the upper position needs the plate's cut-outs at the front and back of the drawer, and the lower position needs them on the left and right. The plate lifts food so air flows under it.

For Dehydrate, the guide puts one layer of food on the basket floor, then the crisper plate, then a second layer on the plate. It says a mid-level rack adds dehydrating capacity and can be bought separately if your model does not include one; SharkNinja's AF181 box list does not include it.

For even browning, the guide says to spread food in one layer without overlap, or shake it halfway through, and to reduce conventional oven recipes by 25 degrees. It suggests at least a tablespoon of oil for fresh vegetables and potatoes.

Counter space and power

SharkNinja's page gives 16.3 by 12.6 by 14.17 inches (length, width, height), a weight of 12.57 pounds, a 31.2-inch cord, and 1,750 watts at 120 volts drawing 14.6 amps. The owner's guide also gives 1750W at 120 volts and 60 hertz.

The AF181 guide asks for adequate space above and on all sides for air circulation but gives no distance in inches. It says to use a level, clean, dry worktop away from the edge, not to place it in or near a microwave, toaster oven or other oven, and to keep the intake vent and rear air outlet uncovered.

The guide rules out extension cords, sockets below the counter and external timer switches. It also says: "To eliminate a choking hazard for young children, remove and discard the protective cover fitted on the power plug of this appliance."

Cleaning after every use

The guide says to unplug the unit and clean it thoroughly after every use. The basket and crisper plate can go in the dishwasher or be washed by hand, though SharkNinja recommends hand-washing the basket to extend its life.

The main unit and control panel are wiped with a damp cloth and never immersed or put in a dishwasher. For stuck-on food, the guide says to soak the basket or plate in warm, soapy water, and it rules out metal scouring pads anywhere on the appliance.

The basket and crisper plate become extremely hot during cooking. The guide says to place them only on a heat-resistant surface after removing them and to use oven mitts or silicone-tipped tongs to take food out. The safeguards add "DO NOT touch hot surfaces. Appliance surfaces are hot during and after operation"; read the Important Safeguards in the owner's guide before first use.

One-year warranty: first owner, authorized retailers

The guide's one-year limited warranty from SharkNinja covers purchases from authorized retailers, for the original owner and product only, and is not transferable. It assumes normal household use and maintenance as the owner's guide describes, and excludes products bought or used outside North America.

SharkNinja repairs or replaces a defective unit or non-wearable parts at its discretion. A replacement's cover ends six months after you receive it or at the end of the original term, whichever is later. Wearable parts such as racks and pans, commercial use, tampering and misuse are excluded.

Claims start with a phone call to SharkNinja and need the receipt as proof of purchase. SharkNinja covers sending the unit in, but the guide says a fee applies when it ships the repaired or replacement unit back, so check the current amount when you call.

Common questions

Does the Ninja AF181 air fry at 450 degrees?

Only in Max Crisp. SharkNinja's owner's guide gives a 450 degree Fahrenheit maximum for Max Crisp and Air Broil and 400 degrees for all other functions. Air Broil is not among the AF181's functions, and Max Crisp's temperature cannot be adjusted.

What comes in the box?

SharkNinja lists a 6.5-quart nonstick basket, a crisper plate and 20 chef-inspired recipes. The mid-level dehydrating rack mentioned in the guide is not on that list.

Can the basket go in the dishwasher?

Yes. The guide says the basket and crisper plate are dishwasher safe, though it recommends hand-washing the basket to extend its life. The main unit is wiped with a damp cloth only.
