Fit and limits

Strengths

  • One countertop unit covers microwave, air fry on the included pan, convection bake and grill
  • The manual prints time and temperature ranges for every mode, plus a From Frozen program
  • The Combi Crisp Pan and trivet can go in the dishwasher's top rack

Caveats

  • Needs 8 inches clear at each side, 12 above and a surface at least 36 inches off the floor
  • Air fry cooks on a flat pan in one layer at 400 to 450 F, not in a basket
  • Breville's page says 25.57 lb and its manual about 33.9 lb, with no explanation

A microwave first, with air fry, oven and grill added

Breville files the Combi Wave 3 in 1 under Microwaves and describes it as an air fryer, convection oven and inverter microwave in one countertop unit. Its cavity is 1.1 cubic feet (32 litres) and the manual gives a 12.4-inch glass turntable, so food cooks on the turntable rather than in a drawer or basket.

That matters if you arrived here from air fryers. The air fry mode runs on the included Combi Crisp Pan set on the turntable, so this unit takes a microwave's place on the counter rather than adding a separate basket fryer beside one.

The listing's model BMO870BSS, part number BMO870BSS1BUC1 and UPC 021614802187 all appear in the product data behind Breville's BMO870 page, and Breville's instruction book is titled Instruction Book - BMO870. The box holds the oven, the Combi Crisp Pan and a trivet, according to both Breville's page and the manual.

What each cooking mode allows, per the manual

Air Fry preheats for 3 minutes with the Combi Crisp Pan in the high position, then runs from 1 to 60 minutes at 400 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The manual says to lay food flat in a single layer and to turn it when the oven beeps halfway.

Oven runs 1 to 120 minutes at 100 to 450 degrees after a preheat, and the manual highly recommends setting the dish on the trivet. Fast Combi alternates microwave, convection and grill for 1 to 90 minutes at 300 to 450 degrees. Grill uses the top elements for 1 to 20 minutes with the pan in the high position.

Microwave runs from 1 second to 95 minutes across 10 power levels. From Frozen covers chicken, meat or fish from 8 ounces to 2 pounds, taking 16 to 60 minutes. Keep Warm holds 160 degrees for 5 minutes to 2 hours, and Breville's page counts 19 built-in smart presets.

Placement: 8 inches at the sides, 12 above, 36 inches off the floor

The manual asks for at least 8 inches (20 cm) between the oven and side walls and 12 inches (30 cm) above it, on a level surface at least 36 inches (91 cm) above the floor. It must not be placed in a cabinet, built in or enclosed, and the legs must stay on.

The manual gives the outside size as 20.4 inches wide, 20.2 inches deep with the handle and 12.5 inches high. Where walls stand on both sides, adding the two 8-inch gaps to that width means about 36.4 inches from wall to wall.

The manual also says not to install it over a range cooktop or other heat-producing appliance, and that doing so could damage the oven and void the warranty. Keep it away from sinks and off metal surfaces such as a drain board, as the safety pages instruct.

Power: its own circuit and a grounded outlet

The rating is 120 volts, 60 hertz and 1,400 watts. The manual lists microwave input at 1,200 W, convection input at 1,400 W, grill input at 1,100 W and microwave output at 1,100 W. One Amazon bullet instead pairs 1200 W with convection input, which neither Breville document supports.

Breville recommends a separate circuit dedicated to this oven and says no other appliances should be on that circuit while it runs. It must be plugged into a properly grounded outlet, with no extension cord and no adapter plug; if the cord is too short, the manual says to have a qualified electrician install an outlet nearby.

The manual's grounding, microwave-energy and superheated-liquid warnings run across its first twelve pages. It also warns that hot contents can cause severe burns, that the outer housing may be hot during and after cooking, and that the Combi Crisp Pan's surfaces and legs are hot during and after operation. Read those pages in Breville's instruction book before first use rather than relying on a summary here.

Two different weights, and slightly different dimensions

Breville's product page lists the weight as 25.57 lbs (11.6 kg). The instruction book's specification page gives a net weight of approximately 33.9 lb (15.4 kg). Neither document explains the gap, so plan any shelf or lifting on the heavier figure until Breville confirms which is right.

The dimensions differ slightly too. Breville's page gives 20.5 by 20.1 by 12.6 inches (width, depth, height), while the manual gives 20.4 inches wide, 20.2 deep with the handle, 19.3 deep without it, and 12.5 high. The clearance rules above apply whichever figure you use.

Cleaning and warranty

The manual says to unplug before cleaning and to wipe the cavity with a soft, damp cloth after each use, because residue left inside can make it overheat, smoke or catch fire. It rules out steam cleaners, metal scouring pads and harsh cleaners on the door surface.

The Combi Crisp Pan and trivet can go in the top rack of a dishwasher or be washed by hand, and the pan's legs detach by pinching them inwards. The glass turntable should cool to room temperature before washing, and the oven light is replaced through a Breville service center.

Breville's product page and the Amazon listing both give a 1 Year Limited Warranty. The instruction book itself does not state the length; it points to breville.com or a QR code for the full terms. The manual adds that installing the oven near or over a heat source could void the warranty.

Common questions

Does the Combi Wave 3 in 1 have an air fryer basket?

No. Its air fry mode cooks on the included Combi Crisp Pan, set in the high position on the glass turntable, after a 3-minute preheat. The manual gives 400 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 to 60 minutes, with food laid flat in one layer.

How much space does it need on the counter?

Breville's manual asks for 8 inches at each side and 12 inches above, on a level surface at least 36 inches off the floor, and it must not go in a cabinet. Between two side walls, the manual's 20.4-inch width plus both gaps comes to about 36.4 inches.

What does it weigh?

Breville's product page says 25.57 lbs (11.6 kg), but the instruction book gives a net weight of approximately 33.9 lb (15.4 kg). Neither explains the difference, so plan on the heavier figure until Breville confirms.
