Vitamix places the 5200 in its Legacy Series.
Vitamix's What comes in the box list is the motor base, the classic 64-ounce container and the classic tamper, which matches Amazon's list. The manual says the machine ships with the wet blade container, marked W, and that a separate dry blade container, marked D, is sold separately.
The manual and Vitamix's page both describe the 5200 as a household machine, and the manual's safeguards say household use only. Plan on it as a home blender.
Size, power and the cord
The manual's specification page gives the height as 20.5 inches, width 7.25 inches and depth 8.75 inches, and Vitamix's page gives the same three figures. At 20.5 inches with the container on the base, measure the space under your wall cabinets before planning where it will live.
The manual lists the motor as approximately 2 peak output horsepower and the electrical rating as 120 V, 50/60 Hz, 11.5 A, with a U.S. three-prong grounded cord. Vitamix's page repeats 2 HP and 11.5 amps. Amazon's details add a wattage of 1380 W, which neither Vitamix document states. The manual says to use a grounded outlet only and never an adapter or extension cord.
The cord length differs. Vitamix's page gives 6 feet, while Amazon's details give 3.5 feet. The manual describes a long cord with flexible retainers. Product weight is 10 pounds 9 ounces on Vitamix's page and 10.9 pounds on Amazon.
Controls: variable dial plus a separate High switch
The manual describes three controls: an On/Off switch, a High/Variable switch and a Variable Speed Dial. The dial only works when the High/Variable switch is set to Variable. Amazon's bullets describe 10 variable speed settings plus the High setting.
The manual says to start on Variable with the dial at 1, turn up to 10 and only then switch to High, and never to start on 10 or on High. It says High also runs the motor's cooling fan at maximum. Vitamix's page gives the same starting sequence and the same note about the fan.
The three controls above are the only ones the manual lists, so blending time is set by you rather than by a program. Amazon's bullets describe the controls as 10 variable speeds plus High, which matches the manual.
Overheating and the reset wait
The manual describes Automatic Overload Protection, which shuts the motor off if it overheats. On 120 V machines, it says to turn the power switch off for up to 45 minutes to reset, longer in a hot room, and also describes a cooling method. Vitamix's page FAQ says some shutdowns reset in a few minutes and most take up to 30 minutes.
The manual also sets limits on the tamper. It says the tamper should be used no more than 30 consecutive seconds and only with the container no more than two-thirds full.
Vitamix's FAQ also says a new motor may give off a burning smell as the windings cure, and that it dissipates. It suggests reducing the quantity for cooked potatoes, rice or beans.
Cleaning: self-clean the container, hand-wash the lid
The manual's normal cleaning is a blend of warm water and a couple of drops of dish detergent, run up to High for 30 to 60 seconds, then rinsed. Vitamix's page and the listing describe the same 30 to 60 second self-cleaning with no disassembly.
The manual says not to put the container, lid or lid plug in the dishwasher. The lid and plug are separated and washed by hand. The motor base is wiped with a damp cloth and never put in water, and the manual suggests cleaning around the switches with a moistened cotton swab because they can become sticky with use.
The manual also includes an optional sanitizing procedure. Follow the manual's own instructions for that. If the container's retainer nut loosens, the manual says to stop using the container and call Vitamix.
Warranty and registration
Vitamix's page and Amazon's bullets both give a 7-year limited warranty. The manual's warranty page names the 7-year limited warranty and directs you to Vitamix's website for the terms; we did not read those terms, so check the conditions there before relying on specific coverage.
The manual says a 5200 bought from a dealer or a retail store in the United States or Canada is not registered with Vitamix until you register it, online, by email or by phone. It also says failure to register will not diminish your warranty rights.
Record the model and serial number from the back of the motor base, as the manual asks. It says to contact Vitamix before returning the product for any reason, including repair.
