A small 98cc dual fuel inverter for 120V loads

The DF280iX is WEN's 2,800-watt surge, 98cc dual fuel inverter generator. Amazon's model and part fields read DF280iX and its UPC matches the barcode in WEN's product data. The panel has one 120V NEMA 5-20R duplex, a 12V DC outlet and two USB ports rated 1A and 2.1A, plus parallel ports, an Eco-Mode switch and an LPG inlet. There is no 240V outlet and no 30-amp receptacle.

The manual's packing list shows the generator, an LPG regulator hose assembly, a funnel, a screwdriver, a wrench handle and spark arrestor tools. The manual says the engine ships without oil, and the packing list does not show a bottle of oil, so plan to buy 11.8 fluid ounces before the first start.

Running watts on each fuel

WEN rates the DF280iX at 2,250 running watts on gasoline and 2,000 on propane, with 2,800 surge watts on either fuel. The manual tells you to keep the total rated wattage of connected devices at or below 2,250 on gasoline or 2,000 on LPG. The 2,800 in the listing title is a short surge figure, not continuous power.

Eco-Mode is only for loads under 75 percent of rated watts, which the manual gives as 1,685 watts on gasoline and 1,500 on propane; above that the engine must run at full speed. For inverter power quality, WEN's product page claims under 0.3 percent THD at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load. The manual pages we read give no THD figure.

Tank size and runtime

The gasoline tank holds 1.58 gallons, and the manual gives a half-load run time of 9 hours. WEN's product page adds 13.9 hours at half load on a 20-pound LPG tank; the manual pages we read do not repeat that propane figure. No runtime is published at full load in the sources we read.

The manual asks for 87 octane minimum and says not to store the generator with fuel in the tank for more than two months. WEN's page lists a fuel shutoff feature, and the manual still recommends draining the carburetor after each use and before storage.

Weight, starting, noise and clearance

The manual lists a net weight of 45.2 pounds and WEN's page says 45 pounds, while Amazon's details table says 52.9 pounds. Dimensions are 19.7 by 11.6 by 18.7 inches. Starting is by recoil pull only, with a 4-in-1 dial; there is no electric start, battery or remote. The noise rating is 60 dBA at no load, with no measurement distance given.

Before starting, the manual says to place the unit outside on a dry, level surface with at least two feet of clearance on all sides, and never inside homes, garages, crawl spaces or partially enclosed areas. If it will feed a building's wiring, the manual requires a qualified electrician and a transfer switch. The manual pages we read do not state a CARB or 50-state status.

CO Watchdog and parallel use

The CO Watchdog shuts the generator down if CO around it builds up, then blinks red for at least five minutes; yellow means a system error or that the sensor has reached end of life. WEN gives the sensor a lifetime of about seven years, says the generator will not run with it disconnected, and says it is not a substitute for an indoor CO alarm. Exhaust blowing toward the sensor can trigger a shutdown.

Parallel operation with a second WEN generator needs the WEN Parallel Connection Kit, which is sold separately. The manual pages we read do not list which WEN models are compatible partners, so confirm with WEN before buying a second unit.

Oil schedule and a warranty capped by hours

Oil capacity is 0.35 liters, and the manual lists oil grades by temperature. Check it before each use or every 8 hours. For break-in, keep loads at or below half of rated wattage for the first 8 hours, change the oil, then change it again after 25 hours. Run the generator at least 15 minutes every month.

WEN's home-use warranty runs three years or 500 hours, whichever comes first: parts and labor for one year and parts only for three. Professional or commercial use gets ninety days. It applies to the original purchaser buying from a direct WEN vendor, the buyer prepays shipping to WEN, and wear items including recoil starters, filters and spark plugs are excluded.
