WEN's DF480iX makes 4,000 running watts on gasoline or 3,600 on propane according to its manual, with electric start, CO Watchdog shutoff, four 5-20R outlets and a TT-30R RV outlet. One Amazon bullet overstates propane watts and the Amazon description overstates propane run time, so go by the manual.

What you get: a 224cc dual-fuel inverter with an RV outlet

The DF480iX is WEN's 4,800-watt dual-fuel inverter generator with a 224cc single-cylinder engine, electric start, and a recoil starter as backup. The manual lists it at 78.5 pounds, the same weight the Amazon listing gives, and 23.8 by 12.6 by 22.1 inches. Amazon's dimension field is garbled, so use the manual's figures.

The manual's packing list includes 20.3 fluid ounces of engine oil, a spark plug socket, a funnel, a screwdriver and an LPG regulator hose. The control panel carries four 120V NEMA 5-20R household outlets on two duplex receptacles, a 120V TT-30R RV receptacle, a 12V DC outlet with an 8A breaker, and two USB ports rated 1A and 2.1A. There is no 240V outlet on this model.

Watts per fuel, and a propane figure that differs by source

WEN's manual rates the DF480iX at 4,000 running and 4,800 starting watts on gasoline, and 3,600 running and 4,320 starting watts on propane. It lists rated current as 33.3 amps AC and recommends keeping continuous load at or below 3,600 watts on gas or 3,240 watts on propane, which is 90 percent of the rating, for steady voltage.

One Amazon listing bullet gives 4,000 running watts on propane, while the listing's own description, WEN's product page and the manual all say 3,600. Plan around 3,600 watts on propane unless WEN tells you otherwise. The manual says to keep Eco-Mode engaged below 3,000 watts and switched off above 3,000 watts, because the engine must run at full speed for larger loads.

Claims that appear only on the listing or product page

WEN's product page and the listing state harmonic distortion under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load, and a decibel figure at quarter load with no measuring distance. We searched every page of the manual and found no THD or decibel figure. Treat THD as a product-page claim, and because no distance is stated, we do not repeat the noise number as a comparable figure.

Neither WEN's product page nor the manual we read mentions CARB or 50-state status, so ask WEN if that matters where you live. The manual's parts list includes a part named a remote start and electric start module, but none of the operating pages we read describe a remote, and the listing configuration we checked is Dual Fuel plus Electric Start. Do not assume a remote is included.

Tank size and run time: gasoline agrees, propane does not

The manual lists a 1.9-gallon fuel tank and half-load run time of 7 hours on gasoline. For propane it gives 12 hours on a 20-pound tank at half load, which matches WEN's product page. The Amazon description instead says 20 hours on propane at half load. The manual is the more conservative figure, so plan around 12 hours on a 20-pound cylinder.

The generator has a low-oil shutoff and a data meter on the panel. Parallel operation with a second WEN generator needs WEN's parallel connection kit, sold separately; the manual says to follow the kit's own instructions, which we did not read.

A small lithium start battery and an early oil schedule

The manual lists a 12V, 1.6Ah lithium-ion starting battery, shipped disconnected and only partly charged, so the first start may need the recoil starter. It says to replace the battery once its capacity falls to 80 percent of new, to use only WEN part 56480iX-067, and to disconnect it during long idle periods or use a trickle charger, which is not included.

The generator ships without oil. Crankcase capacity is 20.3 fluid ounces, the same as the included bottle, and the manual lists 30W, 10W-30 or synthetic 5W-30 by temperature. Break-in calls for eight hours at or below half load, with oil changes after the first 8 hours, after 25 hours and then every 50 hours. The manual also says to drain the carburetor after each use and that failing to maintain the generator voids the warranty.

Outdoor placement, CO Watchdog and warranty terms

The manual says to use it only outside and far from windows, doors and vents, never in homes, garages, crawl spaces or partly enclosed areas, and to keep at least five feet of clearance from buildings or other equipment. It also says not to run it in rain or wet conditions, and that a building connection needs a qualified electrician and a transfer switch. Read those pages before first use.

The CO Watchdog shuts the engine off if CO builds up, is not a substitute for an indoor CO alarm, and has a sensor life of about seven years. The home-use warranty runs three years or 500 hours, whichever comes first, with parts and labor for one year and parts only for years two and three. Commercial use gets ninety days, the purchase must come from a direct WEN vendor, and the buyer prepays shipping for warranty returns.
