What you get: a gasoline-only 224cc generator with wheels
The GN5602X is a WEN gasoline generator with a 224cc single-cylinder engine, electric start and a recoil backup. WEN's page and the manual pages we read describe gasoline fuel only, with no propane inlet listed on the panel. The manual lists a 12V, 7Ah lead-acid starting battery, shipped partly charged, with recoil as the backup.
The manual's packing list does not include engine oil, and the manual says the generator ships without oil, so buy 16.9 fluid ounces before first start. A red shipping bracket and a support post under the alternator must be removed before running it.
Watts, outlets and what transfer-switch ready means here
The manual rates it at 4,500 running and 5,600 surge watts at 120V, with 37.5 rated amps and a 37-amp main breaker. There is no 240V output. The panel has two 120V 5-20R household outlets on a 20-amp breaker, a 120V 30-amp TT-30R RV outlet, and a 120V 30-amp L5-30R twist-lock on a 30-amp breaker.
WEN calls the L5-30R transfer-switch ready. The manual lists 120V output only, with no 240V outlet on the panel. We did not read the manual's transfer switch or grounding pages, so have a licensed electrician confirm which of your circuits this outlet can feed before you buy an inlet box or transfer switch.
Run time, tank size and weight
WEN and the manual give 12.5 hours of run time at half load. The manual lists the tank as 4.36 gallons with 87 octane minimum, while WEN's page and Amazon round it to 4.3 gallons. The onboard data meter shows voltage, frequency, total runtime and session runtime, and there is a low-oil alert light on the panel.
The manual gives the weight as 110.23 pounds with the wheel and handle kit and 103.62 pounds without it, and dimensions of 22.8 by 23.6 by 23.0 inches assembled. Amazon lists 120 pounds, which neither WEN document supports. WEN's page and Amazon give no decibel figure, and neither WEN document we read states a THD figure or CARB status.
Break-in and an oil schedule that starts early
The manual asks for the first 8 hours at or below half load, an oil change after those 8 hours, another after 25 hours, and then every 50 hours. It lists oil grades by temperature; use the grade the manual's chart gives for your conditions.
WEN says to drain the carburetor after each use and before storage, not to store fuel in the tank for more than two months, and to run the generator at least 20 minutes a month to charge the battery. The manual also says failure to maintain the generator properly will void the warranty, so keep a record of oil changes.
Placement and CO Watchdog shutdown
The manual says to use it only outside, far from windows, doors and vents, never in rain or wet conditions, and on a dry, firm, level surface. Its safety page asks for at least 5 feet of clearance from buildings or other equipment, while its starting checklist mentions at least two feet on all sides; follow the larger figure near a house.
CO Watchdog shuts the engine down if CO builds up, blinks red for at least five minutes afterwards, and is not a substitute for an indoor CO alarm. A yellow light means a system error or the end of the sensor's roughly seven-year life. The generator will not run with the sensor disconnected, and exhaust blowing toward the sensor can cause a shutdown.
Warranty: three years, but labor for one
WEN's page and Amazon describe a three-year limited warranty. The manual's written terms cover home use for three years or 500 hours, whichever comes first, with parts and labor for one year and parts only for years two and three. Professional or commercial use gets ninety days, and missing or damaged parts must be reported within 30 days.
The place of purchase must be a direct WEN vendor. The buyer prepays shipping for warranty returns. Batteries, wheel kits, recoil starters and voltage regulators are excluded as wear items, according to the manual's warranty page.
