Fit and limits
Strengths
- High airflow for large open rooms per the maker's figures
- Two permanent pre-filters listed in the box contents
- Six fan speeds per the listing
Caveats
- Every filter change is a pair of filters
- Listing coverage figures differ from AirDoctor's
- One-year warranty; no manual found online
A large unit with two sets of filters
The AD5500 is AirDoctor's floor-standing purifier for large rooms. AirDoctor's box contents list one unit, two permanent pre-filters, two carbon filters and two UltraHEPA filters, so every filter change involves a pair. AirDoctor's page lists the AD5500 Classic version.
AirDoctor lists the unit at 16 by 16 inches and 28.75 inches tall, weighing 33 pounds, and Amazon gives the same footprint and 33.9 or 34 pounds. The Amazon listing gives six fan speeds; AirDoctor's page does not describe the controls, so confirm mode and timer details from the in-box manual.
Coverage: 1,043 square feet at four changes an hour
AirDoctor's specifications give coverage of up to 1,043 square feet at four air changes per hour and a smoke CADR of 556 cubic feet per minute. The 4,172 square foot figure in the Amazon title is the same airflow counted as one change per hour.
The Amazon special-features field instead says the unit circulates 1,001 square feet four times an hour or 2,001 square feet twice an hour, which does not match AirDoctor's current 1,043 figure. Neither AirDoctor page names the CADR test standard or mentions AHAM verification.
Filter replacement doubles up
AirDoctor's listing copy says to replace carbon every six months and UltraHEPA every 12 months, using genuine AirDoctor filters. Because the AD5500 holds two of each, a six-month change means two carbon filters and a yearly change means two carbon and two UltraHEPA filters.
AirDoctor's filter subscription ships first at six months and then every 12 months. The pre-filters are described as permanent; how and how often to clean them is in the manual, which we could not find online, so plan to read the in-box copy.
Placement and power
At 28.75 inches tall and 16 inches square, the AD5500 is a floor unit. We found no AirDoctor document stating the clearance to leave around it, so allow open space on all sides and keep it out of corners until you have the in-box manual.
The Amazon listing gives 60 watts. AirDoctor's product page does not list power draw. Neither page we read says whether the unit emits ozone or carries CARB certification, so we make no claim about either.
Claims we do not repeat
AirDoctor's marketing makes claims about the particle size UltraHEPA captures and about health and wellness benefits. We did not review the testing behind these, so this guide does not restate them, and it makes no claim about germ or gas removal either.
The facts we rely on are the filter set, the four-changes-per-hour coverage, the smoke CADR, the dimensions and the replacement intervals. Where Amazon's figures differ from AirDoctor's, we note both and use AirDoctor's current page for sizing.
One-year warranty, with a shipping and processing fee
AirDoctor's warranty page gives a one-year limited warranty from the original purchase date against defects in materials and workmanship, for the original purchaser only. AirDoctor repairs or replaces a defective unit without charge, but the page says a shipping and processing fee will apply.
The warranty excludes accident, misuse, use other than described in the product manual, and damage from failing to maintain and clean the unit as the manual specifies. AirDoctor's product page advertises a five-year extended warranty included only with an active filter subscription; confirm with AirDoctor how that applies to an Amazon purchase.
