Fit and limits
Strengths
- BowFlex publishes all 15 weight settings rather than a range
- Storage trays included, and the maker states clearly it is sold as a pair
- Comparison table lets you check this against the 52, 90 and 1090 models
Caveats
- Steps widen to 5 pounds above 25 pounds, where many lifters want finer jumps
- The dumbbell is 16.9 inches long even at the 5 pound setting
- Two years on parts, where BowFlex's heavier models get three
Sold as a pair, in BowFlex's own words
BowFlex's product overview for this model ends with the line sold as a pair, and Amazon's page title reads BowFlex Results Series 552 SelectTech Dumbbells (Pair) with a number of items of 2. The listing's item weight of 110.6 pounds is consistent with two 52.5 pound dumbbells plus their trays.
Storage trays are included on both the maker page and the Amazon bullets. The SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbell Stand and the SelectTech Dumbbell Stand with Media Rack are listed separately by BowFlex, so lifting the set off the floor is an extra purchase.
Fifteen settings, and BowFlex publishes every one
The specification panel lists the 15 weight settings per dumbbell in full: 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 52.5 pounds. That is 2.5 pound steps up to 25 pounds, then 5 pound steps to 50, with a final 2.5 pound step to the top.
The jump from 25 to 30 pounds is where the fine steps end. If you are working in the 25 to 50 pound band and want smaller increments, this set will not give them to you, and that pattern is visible on the maker's own list rather than something you have to discover in use.
Adjustment is by twisting a dial at each end of the handle. BowFlex describes premium metal components attaching the plates to the handle, a secure locking mechanism and non-slip grips. Neither page we read explains what happens if the dial is turned while the dumbbell is off its tray.
The length never changes, which is the trade-off
BowFlex lists the dimensions per dumbbell as 16.9 inches long by 8.3 inches wide by 9 inches high, and gives no second figure for a lighter setting. Amazon's measurements table gives 16.9 by 8.3 inches, matching.
So at 5 pounds this is still a 16.9 inch dumbbell. For pressing and flye movements that length is workable, but for anything where the ends of two dumbbells meet, or where you need to tuck them close to your body, measure first. The selector design means the unused plates ride along in the tray rather than in your hand.
552 or 52? The difference is cosmetic and it is documented
BowFlex's own overview opens by saying this model has a different look but the same powerful performance as the Results Series 52 Dumbbells. Its comparison table gives the difference precisely: the 552 has a curved dumbbell shape with tapered weight plates and grey accents, while the 52 has a traditional shape with uniform plates and white accents.
Both carry the same 5 to 52.5 pound range, the same 15 settings and the same two-year parts term. If you find both listed, the choice is shape and colour, not capability, according to the maker's table.
The model number on the listing is not BowFlex's store code
Amazon gives both the model number and the part number as BFW0025-OS, with the manufacturer named as Johnson Health Tech Inc. BowFlex's own store lists this product under SKU ZMK4011008, and the Amazon code does not appear on the page.
The product itself is identified beyond reasonable doubt by the matching name, the matching 16.9 by 8.3 inch dimensions and the matching weight list, so this is a code mismatch rather than an identity problem. Still, quote the ASIN and the product name rather than BFW0025-OS when contacting support.
Two years on parts, and what is missing from the published material
The specification panel gives the warranty as parts, two years. The comparison page shows that the heavier 1090 and 90 models in the same range carry three years on parts instead, so the term is not uniform across the SelectTech line.
BowFlex sells separate three-year and five-year protection plans alongside the dumbbells, which tells you the standard cover is the two-year parts term and nothing longer. Read the plan terms before adding one, because they are a separate contract.
We found no BowFlex-hosted owner's manual for this model on the site, so this guide cannot tell you what the manual says about dropping the dumbbells, adjusting off the tray, or inspection and cleaning. Read the printed manual in the box before the first session. Both pages also promote a two-month trial of the JRNY app, which is a subscription that continues at a monthly or yearly charge unless cancelled.
