De'Longhi Dinamica Plus ECAM38085SB, Silver

One-touch milk drinks from an automatic carafe with multiple user profiles

The Dinamica Plus ECAM38085SB is a fully automatic machine with a LatteCrema carafe, touch display and user profiles. The manual describes a carafe with three froth settings, not the steam wand the listing title mentions. Milk has strict fridge limits, the brewing unit needs a monthly water-only rinse, and size figures come only from the listing.

What the Dinamica Plus listing sells

This Silver listing is model ECAM38085SB, the Dinamica Plus. De'Longhi's US support page names the same model as Dinamica Plus, Silver Black, and the instruction book used here is printed for ECAM38085SB with a 120-volt, 60-hertz, 1,250-watt rating. It is a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine with a colour touch display and an automatic milk carafe.

The listing describes 24 one-touch or customised drinks, a 13-setting conical burr grinder, up to four user profiles and a 3.5-inch TFT touch screen. Its included components are the machine, a carbon active filter, measuring scoop, total hardness test, cleaning brush, removable water spout and a hot milk carafe; its detail rows also mention a 100 mL descaler.

The milk system is a carafe, not a wand

The listing title speaks of an 'automatic milk steam wand with 3 frother modes', and one detail row describes an articulating steam wand. The instruction book instead describes a LatteCrema milk carafe with a froth dial offering delicate, creamy and dense settings. Buy it expecting the carafe the manual describes.

The manual lists soya, almond and oat drinks among suitable plant-based options and recommends milk straight from the fridge. Carafe markings are about 100 mL apart. After every milk drink the display asks you to turn the dial to the CLEAN position.

Carafe time limits and cleaning

If milk is left over, the manual says to put the carafe straight back in the fridge and not to keep it there more than two days before cleaning every part. A carafe left out of the fridge for more than 30 minutes should be taken apart and cleaned. A reminder symbol stays on the home screen until the carafe clean is done.

The manual says the only dishwasher-safe parts are the drip tray grille, the milk carafe and the drip tray. The brewing unit is removed at least once a month with the machine off, soaked, and rinsed with water only, with no detergents and no dishwasher. Clean the water tank and ground coffee funnel about monthly too.

First use and daily running

The manual warns that the first run can be noisy while the circuit fills, and that it takes four or five cappuccinos before drinks taste as they should. Every time the machine is switched on it runs a preheat and rinse that cannot be interrupted, and it rinses again when switched off after making coffee.

Use fresh drinking water, not sparkling or distilled water. After three or four days without use, the manual recommends emptying and refilling the tank and running a rinse. The grounds container warning appears 72 hours after the first coffee even if it is not full, as long as the machine stays plugged in, and the metal cup tray gets hot after several milk drinks.

Filter and descaling

The manual lists the descaler, water softener filter and cleaning brush as 'certain models only' and says a filter can be requested from De'Longhi if your model came without one. The filter lasts about two months, or no more than three weeks if the machine sits idle with it fitted, and removing it must be set in the menu.

Descaling is prompted on screen, takes about 30 minutes and needs a container of at least 2 litres (67 fluid ounces). Hot water containing acid comes from the spouts during the cycle, so follow the on-screen prompts and the manual for amounts and handling rather than a summary; this guide does not repeat them.

What the sources do not settle

No De'Longhi US product page for ECAM38085SB turned up in the search made for this guide, so the listing's dimensions of 16.9 inches deep, 9.3 wide and 13.7 high, its 21.7-pound weight and its '3.8 pounds' capacity row are unconfirmed by the maker. The listing's 1,250 watts does match the instruction book's rating.

The listing gives no warranty field, and the support page read here does not state a term. The listing's 'Removable for water cleaning' description of the brew group agrees with the manual's water-only instruction. Check dimensions and cup clearance against your space and the carton before a tight fit.
