De'Longhi Magnifica Start ECAM22022B, Black, Manual Frother

One-touch espresso, coffee and Americano with milk frothed by hand

The Magnifica Start ECAM22022B grinds and brews three one-touch drinks and adds a manual steam spout for milk. It is simple to run but the spout needs cleaning after each use and the brewing group a water-only rinse. Check the carton, because the listing, quick start guide and manual list different accessories.

What the Magnifica Start listing sells

This Black listing is model ECAM22022B, the Magnifica Start with a manual frother. De'Longhi's US product and support pages use the same number, and the quick start guide is printed specifically for ECAM22022B. It grinds and brews automatically, with three one-touch drinks on the panel: Espresso, Coffee and Americano, plus a Steam button for milk.

Milk is not automatic here. The steam and hot water spout, which the manual calls the cappuccino maker, froths milk in a jug you hold under it while you turn a dial. De'Longhi lists 13 grind settings, a 15 bar pump, a 60.87-ounce tank, 1,250 watts at 120 volts and dimensions of 17 by 9.25 by 14 inches.

Check the box against three different lists

The listing's included components are the machine, a measuring scoop and a total water hardness test. The quick start guide's accessories page shows a hardness test paper, a pre-ground coffee scoop, descaler, and a water softener filter marked 'certain models only'. A later page of the same guide tells you to install the provided water filter.

The full instruction book, which covers a range of models, also says the number and type of accessories differ according to model. So it is unclear from the documents whether your box will contain a filter or descaler. Check the carton when it arrives, and note that the manual says to descale with De'Longhi descaler only.

Frothing milk by hand

The manual says the machine can be used with cow's milk and with plant-based drinks, and not with raw milk. Frothing is done with the cappuccino maker: press the Steam button, turn the steam dial to I with the spout in your jug, and turn it back to 0 to stop. The manual's own page carries the full sequence.

The spout is cleaned every time it is used. The manual has you let it cool, take the cappuccino maker and nozzle off, and clear its two small holes with a toothpick; follow its page rather than this summary. Hot water from the same spout needs the same care.

Grinder settings and pre-ground coffee

The manual says the grinder is factory set and may not need adjustment at first. If you do adjust it, turn the dial one click at a time, only while the grinder is running, and expect the change to show only after at least two cups. Turning toward 7 helps when coffee comes too slowly; toward 1 gives a fuller-bodied coffee.

Pre-ground coffee goes in a separate funnel, one level scoop at a time and never with the machine off. Only one cup can be made at a time this way, Doppio+ cannot be made with pre-ground coffee, and a Long coffee needs a second scoop halfway. The quick start guide adds an extraction guide for judging whether to grind finer or coarser.

Space, first use and routine cleaning

The manual asks for at least 3 cm (1.18 inches) between the machine and side and rear walls and 15 cm (5.9 inches) above it, away from taps and sinks and out of rooms that can freeze. It says the first 4 to 5 coffees may not give satisfactory results; the quick start guide says to brew and discard the first 3 to 4 espressos.

The grounds container light comes on when it needs emptying, and the manual says the message also appears 72 hours after the first coffee even if not full, provided the machine stays plugged in. The brewing group comes out through the right-hand door and is rinsed with water only, with no detergent and no dishwasher. Descaling takes about 30 minutes and needs a 2 litre container.

Small differences between sources

De'Longhi gives 19.82 pounds and the listing 19.62 pounds; both give 1,250 watts and 17 by 9.25 by 14 inches. The maker's bean hopper line reads '8.82' under a grams label and the cup height '5.46' under a millimetres label, so check those figures on the box before relying on them. The listing's details table does not state a warranty.

The quick start guide says registering the machine adds one year of warranty, and De'Longhi's product page mentions a full manufacturer warranty and an extended warranty through registration without stating the base term in the text read here. The manual also recommends two or three rinse cycles when the machine is switched on again after three or four days unused.
