A 48 A hardwired J1772 charger sold under the DEWALT name

The DXPAEV048 is a hardwired Level 2 charger with a 25-foot SAE J1772 cable, an LCD screen and Wi-Fi app control. The manual and specification sheet say it is imported by Paragon Group USA, which uses the DEWALT name under licence. DEWALT's support page says hardwire installation is required for the 48 A model.

The manual's box-contents page lists what ships, including the wall bracket and hardware the product page mentions. It gives a net weight of 18 pounds and main-unit dimensions of 11.1 by 7.4 by 17.3 inches; Amazon lists 21.8 pounds.

The charger works with vehicles using the SAE J1772 standard. DEWALT's page says a Tesla adapter is sold separately, and the manual says the product is for household use only and not for commercial garages.

Circuit: 60 A breaker for 48 A, with lower settings listed

The manual's circuit table pairs a 60 A breaker with 48 A output, 50 A with 40 A, 40 A with 32 A, 30 A with 24 A and 20 A with 16 A, on a dedicated two-pole breaker rated at 125 percent of the maximum load. The specification sheet adds that hardwired installations should use a non-GFCI breaker, and both documents list integrated CCID20 ground-fault protection.

The manual says permanent connection must only be done by a licensed electrician in line with the NEC and local codes. That electrician should confirm your panel can support the circuit you choose and whether a permit is required.

The manual asks for the main unit to sit at least 18 inches above the floor and suggests the handle holster sit between 24 and 48 inches above grade. Plan the location around the 25-foot cable and your car's charge port.

Current settings and power differ between documents

DEWALT's product page and the listing describe adjustable current from 12 to 48 A. The specification sheet lists app settings of 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 40 and 48 A. The manual's own specification lists configurable current of 48, 40, 32, 24 and 16 A. Check the app on your unit to see which steps it offers.

Power is 11.5 kW on DEWALT's page and the listing, and 11 kW in both the manual and the specification sheet. DEWALT claims up to 46 miles of range per hour. The specification sheet adds 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, over-the-air firmware updates, local storage of up to 90 days or 100 sessions of charging data, and power measurement to within 2 percent.

The manual's app-functions page lists what the app does, and its troubleshooting page lists error codes E1 to E12. Read both before installation so you know what the display is telling you.

Outdoor marketing, cautious manual

DEWALT's page and the listing call the charger indoor and outdoor rated with an IP66 rating and a NEMA 4X-type enclosure. The manual and specification sheet list a Type 4 enclosure and an operating range of minus 22 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The manual is more cautious about weather. It describes the product as intended for indoor and protected outdoor areas, says not to use it when you, the car or the charger are exposed to severe rain, snow or an electrical storm, and suggests installing it under a carport or in a garage. Plan the location with that in mind.

The manual also says not to power the charger from a generator and not to use extension cords with it, two limits that matter if you planned to charge from a portable generator during an outage.

Certification and origin wording conflicts

DEWALT's page and the listing describe the charger as CSA certified, and the manual lists agency approval as CSAus. The specification sheet instead says UL listed and complying with UL 2594, UL 2231-1 and UL 2231-2. We did not see a certificate number in any source; ask the support line for the listing file if an inspector needs it.

The listing says the charger is built in the USA, DEWALT's page says it is designed by a team in the USA, and the specification sheet and manual cover say it is made in the PRC and imported by Paragon Group USA.

Three-year warranty and a 90-day refund window

The manual gives a three-year limited warranty from the date of retail purchase by the original end-user purchaser, covering defects in material and workmanship, with a list of exclusions, and says the product is not intended for commercial use. Read the exclusions before relying on coverage.
