What the Dreo 539 is

The Amazon listing is the white, non-Wi-Fi version of the Dreo Air Purifier 539, model DR-HAP009, which the manual confirms. The listing gives it as 9.37 inches across and 15.35 inches tall, weighing 6.86 pounds. Dreo's product page also offers a Smart Wi-Fi version.

The box holds the purifier, one filter, a bottom cover, a user guide and a safety sheet. Dreo's page describes the filter as three layers, and the manual shows it loading from the bottom of the unit, so you need to turn the purifier over to change it.

Room size: 245 square feet verified

The Amazon bullets say the 539 is AHAM Verified at a CADR of 158 CFM, refreshing a 245 square foot room every 12.4 minutes, or 4.8 changes an hour. The 1,176 square foot figure, which Dreo's page also uses, assumes one air change per hour.

Dreo's specification block lists 1,176 square feet at one change per hour and 0.3-micron particle retention, but does not repeat the CADR. Size the unit for a bedroom or small room near 245 square feet if you want frequent air changes.

Placement: no set distance, but keep it clear

The manual says to keep the unit away from curtains and walls and not to place it in corners. It does not give a clearance distance in inches, so leave open space around it rather than tucking it beside furniture.

The manual also says not to use essential oils with the unit and to keep it out of humid conditions. Beyond that, the in-box safety sheet carries the safety limits, so read it before choosing a spot in a kitchen or bathroom.

Filter life and cleaning

Both the manual and Dreo's page say to replace the filter every 6 to 8 months, or when the filter change reminder comes on. Hold the Auto button for five seconds to reset the reminder after a change, per the manual.

Brush the pre-filter every 2 to 4 weeks, per the manual. The PM2.5 sensor cannot detect odours, so a smelly room will not raise the fan on its own; set the speed manually when you can smell something the sensor cannot.

Controls and the sensor's limits

The control panel offers four speeds plus Turbo, an auto mode, a sleep mode that turns the display off after five seconds, a 0 to 12 hour timer, an LED-off setting and a child lock set with a three-second hold. It remembers settings, except the timer, after power loss.

The PM2.5 sensor drives a four-colour air-quality light, per Dreo's page, but the manual states it cannot detect odours or gases. Holding power for 10 seconds restores factory settings, so keep the manual to hand if the panel behaves oddly.

Warranty: twelve months per Dreo's store

The manual we read does not print warranty terms. Dreo's product page states that all new Dreo products carry coverage against material defects and workmanship for 12 months from the date of purchase, and that refurbished or second-hand products are not covered.

Dreo refers to a separate warranty policy page for details that we did not read. Keep proof of purchase and check that policy before returning a faulty unit, since the 12-month statement on the product page is the only term we found.
