A 48 A hardwired J1772 charger with solar-aware software

This listing is the IQ EV Charger 2 with order code IQ-EVSE-NA-1060-0100-1120, which Enphase's store and data sheet identify as the 48 A hardwired model with a factory J1772 connector on a 25-foot cable. The data sheet gives a rated output current of 6 to 48 A and up to 11.5 kW on 208/240 V AC. It does not support 277 V charging with the J1772 connector.

In the box, per Enphase, are the charger and faceplate, a wall-mount bracket, mounting hardware, a cable and connector holster and safety instructions. The enclosure measures 14.5 by 9.8 by 4.64 inches. Enphase's store page lists 24.2 pounds, the data sheet 27.39 pounds for this code, and Amazon 27.9 pounds.

Connectivity is 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and Ethernet, with app or RFID access control per Enphase's store page. The data sheet lists ISO 15118 communication and OCPP 2.0.1 and API support, mostly relevant if you use third-party energy software.

Circuit: Enphase specifies a 60 A breaker

Enphase's store page states that a 60 A circuit breaker is required for this model and that it must be installed by a licensed electrician. The data sheet says the hardwired terminal block accepts 18 to 4 AWG conductors and that wiring from the breaker must follow NEC requirements and local codes. Supply cable entry can be from the bottom or rear.

Whether your panel can support a 60 A circuit is a question for a licensed electrician, who should confirm circuit capacity and local permit requirements before you buy. The data sheet rates output at 6 to 48 A; the installation guide that explains the settings was not read, so ask the installer to confirm them.

The charger's built-in protections, per the data sheet, include short-circuit, surge, overcurrent and relay-weld detection, integral ground-fault protection with a 20 mA CCID, and automatic fault reset.

Load balancing and solar charging need Enphase hardware

Enphase and the listing both promote dynamic load balancing that adjusts charging to avoid tripping the main breaker and to avoid a panel upgrade. The data sheet's footnote says this and the solar features are typically available in residential configurations integrated with an Enphase PV system, or a third-party PV system through the Enphase IQ Gateway.

Green charging tracks surplus solar every 30 seconds and changes current in 1 A steps. Scheduling and Storm Guard are listed features. If you have no solar and no IQ Gateway, check with Enphase which of these features work on a standalone installation before relying on load balancing to avoid an upgrade.

The data sheet lists ANSI C12.1 revenue-grade metering at plus or minus 1 percent, and the listing says this makes the charger eligible for utility rebate programmes. Confirm eligibility with your own utility before counting on a rebate.

Outdoor rating and temperatures

The enclosure is rated NEMA 4 and Enphase describes it as fully sealed for outdoor or indoor use. The operating range is minus 40 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit, storage is minus 40 to 185 degrees, relative humidity 5 to 95 percent and altitude up to 8,202 feet, all from the data sheet.

Mounting can be on a wall or an Enphase pedestal. Enphase's store page lists a spare 48 A NACS charging cable and connector as a compatible accessory for this model, and the data sheet says select J1772 SKUs are eligible for field replacement of the cable. Confirm with Enphase before counting on a later switch to NACS.

Listed certifications

The data sheet's compliance list includes NEC Article 625, SAE J1772, NACS, ENERGY STAR, UL 2594, UL 2251, UL 2231-1 and 2231-2, UL 1998, UL 991, UL 3141 PCS-LC, the matching CSA standards, FCC and ICES. Some Mexican and metering items carry a footnote saying certification is in progress. Enphase's store page summarises this as UL certified and ENERGY STAR.

We did not look up a certificate number or the listing directory entry for this charger. If your utility rebate or inspector needs proof, ask Enphase for the listing file or certificate for code IQ-EVSE-NA-1060-0100-1120.

Five-year limited warranty

Enphase's store page, the data sheet and the listing all state a five-year limited warranty. Enphase's full warranty terms were not read for this guide, so check them for installation, labour and transfer conditions before buying, especially if a non-certified installer will fit the charger.

Enphase's store also describes a 30-day return window for purchases made there. Amazon purchases follow Amazon's return rules, so keep your order record and the charger's serial number for any warranty claim with Enphase.
