Gaggia Brera RI9305/48 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine

Espresso drinkers who want a bean route and a separate pre-ground option

The Brera grinds and brews espresso or a long coffee at one button, with a five-mark grind adjustment, a seven to 10.5 gram dose range and a pre-ground compartment for a second blend or decaf. Milk is hand-frothed on a Pannarello wand that wants daily and weekly cleaning, and the removable brew group is washed weekly and greased around every five hundred cycles. The maker's page lists this part number as discontinued.

It takes pre-ground coffee, whatever the listing field says

The operating instructions supplied with this machine describe it as suitable for espresso using either coffee beans or ground coffee, with a separate pre-ground compartment beside the bean hopper and a measuring scoop in the box. The maker's own product page for this part number makes the same point, describing the ground coffee compartment as a way to brew a different blend without changing the beans.

The Amazon details table instead records the coffee input type as whole beans only. That field does not match either maker document we read, and the difference matters if you want a decaf route: the manual explicitly says the pre-ground function allows using pre-ground and decaffeinated coffee.

The manual sets limits on that route. Only ground coffee for espresso machines goes in, never beans or instant; exactly one scoop is allowed, and if two or more scoops are used the machine will not brew and instead runs an empty cycle, discharging the grounds into the dregs drawer. If nothing is added, only water is dispensed.

Five grind marks and a dose you can shift by a few grams

Grind is changed with a knob inside the bean hopper, and the manual is firm that it must only be turned while the grinder is actually working. It also says to press and turn the knob one notch at a time and then brew two or three cups, because that is the only way to notice the difference. The hopper carries reference marks for five settings, a large mark for coarse and a small mark for fine.

Dose is handled by the Aroma button. The manual says the machine can be set to grind between seven and 10.5 grams per coffee, with mild, medium and strong selections plus the pre-ground option, and that the choice must be made before selecting the coffee. Anything caramelized or flavoured is ruled out, and the safety page repeats that instruction.

Cup volume is programmable per button. The manual has you hold the espresso or long-coffee button for five seconds to store the quantity you want, after which that button repeats it. Pressing either button twice brews double the stored quantity, with two grinding cycles and two brewing cycles run automatically.

The Pannarello wand is manual, and it wants daily attention

Milk is frothed by hand on a steam wand fitted with a Pannarello, turned on and off with a selector switch, and the same wand dispenses hot water for americanos or tea. The manual has you fill about a third of the container with cold milk from the fridge, then rotate the container and move it gently up and down.

Cleaning is explicit and frequent. The manual says to dispense hot water through the wand after making milk drinks, to remove the external part of the Pannarello and wash it in fresh drinking water every day after heating milk, and to strip and wash the upper part of the Pannarello weekly along with wiping the wand itself.

It also warns that short spurts of hot water may come out at the start of hot-water or steam dispensing and that the wand reaches high temperatures. The parts list includes a protective gripper for the wand, and the manual's safety pages are worth reading before the first cappuccino.

The brew group is removable, and needs grease eventually

This machine keeps its brew group behind a service door, removed by pulling the handle and pressing the PUSH button with the machine switched off and unplugged. The manual asks for it to be cleaned every time the bean hopper is filled, or at least once a week, whichever comes first.

The washing rule is narrow: lukewarm water only, with no detergent or soap, and the upper filter cleaned carefully before everything is dried thoroughly. Nothing on this machine goes in the dishwasher according to the general cleaning section, and sharp objects and solvents are ruled out.

Lubrication is a scheduled job rather than an optional one. The manual says to grease the brew group guides after roughly five hundred brewing cycles, using only the supplied grease, applied evenly on both side guides, and to reinsert the group without pressing the PUSH button. The dregs drawer and drip tray are emptied and cleaned daily, and the tray seat is cleaned weekly through the openings underneath.

Descaling on Gaggia's terms, and how often

The machine lights an icon when it wants descaling, and the manual says its software tracks water used and is programmed for standard water hardness. Where water is especially hard, or where the machine is used lightly, it recommends descaling every one to two months even if no warning appears. A separate caution page recommends periodic descaling every two to three months and suggests purified or bottled water for taste.

Two instructions are absolute. Only the maker's own descaling solution is to be used, and vinegar is specifically ruled out as a descaler. The Intenza water filter must come out before the solution goes in, and the Pannarello must be removed from the wand first. We are not reproducing the cycle steps here; follow the manual, which also says the whole procedure must be restarted if the machine is switched off part-way.

Routine rinsing is automatic. The manual says a rinse and self-clean cycle runs at start-up with a cold boiler, after priming the circuit, and on the way into standby if a coffee has been brewed. The maker's page describes the same automatic circuit cleaning at switch-on and switch-off.

Model status, power and the conditions that void the warranty

The maker's product page for this exact part number is marked discontinued and says production of the item has stopped. That does not stop a new unit working, but it is worth weighing against parts, accessory and service availability before buying.

For power, the listing gives 1,250 watts at 110 to 120 volts, a 250-gram bean hopper and a 40-ounce water tank, with a cup clearance of 3.25 to 4.5 inches and a dispensing spout you move by hand. The manual says the machine switches off automatically after sixty minutes of inactivity, and the maker's page describes the same one-hour standby.

The manual lists conditions under which it says the warranty is void: use not in accordance with the intended purpose, repairs not carried out by authorized service centers, tampering with the power cord or any part of the machine, storage or use outside a 15 to 45 degree Celsius range, and the use of non-original spare parts and accessories. It also states that damage caused by putting anything other than pre-ground coffee in the compartment is not covered. We have not used this machine.
