Hiboy S2 MAX Long-Range Electric Scooter

Longer flat commutes where range matters more than suspension

The S2 MAX takes the S2 chassis and adds a 48-volt 11.6 amp-hour battery for a stated 40.4 miles, with a 500-watt motor rated to 650 watts peak, three ride modes and 10-inch tires. It has no suspension, one brake lever operating both brakes, and an IPX4 rating the manual says rules out riding in rain.

The long-range member of the S2 family

The S2 MAX is the version of Hiboy's S2 built around a 48-volt, 11.6 amp-hour battery. Hiboy's specification block and the user manual agree on the essentials: 500 watts rated motor power, 650 watts peak, a maximum speed of 19 miles per hour, a maximum load of 220 pounds and an IPX4 rating.

The manual adds the electrical detail: rated voltage 48V DC, maximum input 54.6V DC, an adapter taking 100 to 240 volts and delivering 54.6V DC at 2 amps with a 109-watt output, and charging time of 6 to 7 hours. The Amazon comparison widget puts the pack at 556.8 watt-hours; neither Hiboy's page nor the manual prints a watt-hour figure.

One thing this model does not have is suspension. Hiboy's own specification block lists suspensions as None, so the 10-inch tires are doing all the cushioning. Check that against the surfaces on your route before buying on range alone.

The 40-mile claim comes with printed test conditions

Hiboy's page says 40 miles and the manual says 40.4 miles, and the manual prints where that came from: measured with no wind at 77 degrees Fahrenheit, fully charged, ridden at a steady 11.4 miles per hour on a flat surface with a 165-pound load.

A commute with stops, hills or wind is not that test, so treat 40 miles as a ceiling rather than a plan. The manual prints those conditions precisely so that you can see how far your own ride is from them.

Cold weather makes it worse in a way Hiboy quantifies. The manual says battery range drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and that at minus 4 degrees the riding range is only half or less, recovering as the temperature rises.

Two brakes, one lever, and two different descriptions

The Amazon bullet describes a front mechanical drum brake for precise control and a rear regenerative e-brake. The manual's question-and-answer section describes the same scooter the other way round: it says both brakes are integrated into one lever, and that squeezing it engages the front electronic brake and the rear disc brake together.

Whichever way round the hardware is, the practical point from the manual holds: there is one brake lever, not two, and it operates both systems at once. The manual's question-and-answer entry is the only place either source spells that out.

Riding modes are stated two ways in the same manual as well. Its control panel page describes three modes, Sport at 19 miles per hour, Drive at 16 and Eco at 11, matching the listing bullet. Its question-and-answer section instead says there are two modes, D at 13 miles per hour and S at 19. Ask Hiboy which firmware your unit ships with if the middle mode matters.

Size, weight and what is actually in the box

Hiboy's specification block and the manual agree on 45.7 by 18.9 by 48.2 inches unfolded, folding to a height of 20.7 inches, with an item weight of 40 pounds. The feature text further down Hiboy's own page and the Amazon listing both say 44.1 by 18.9 by 48.2 inches and a folded height of 20.9 inches, and the listing's details give 41.4 pounds while its comparison widget says 41.5.

Hiboy's geometry block is the useful one for fit: an 18.9-inch handlebar, a 20 by 6.5 inch deck and a standing height of 41.8 inches. Its sizing tool suggests rider heights from about 5 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 3 inches, and both Hiboy and the manual give a recommended age of 16 to 50.

Box contents differ between the two sources. Hiboy's page lists the scooter, three Allen wrenches, six screws, a charger and two free inner tubes for front and rear. The manual's package contents page lists a charger, six screws, a valve stem extension and an Allen wrench, with no inner tubes. The listing bullet promises two spare inner tubes and an air pressure detector, so check what actually arrives.

Wet weather, altitude and the kick-off start

Both sources give IPX4, and the manual is direct about what that means: do not ride in the rain, and do not ride through standing water deeper than 0.78 inches. Treat the rating as splash resistance rather than weatherproofing.

There is an altitude limit too, which is easy to miss: the manual says the device is not intended for use at elevations greater than 2,000 metres above sea level. It also says to store the scooter indoors.

The manual's question-and-answer section addresses a throttle that seems not to work, and explains the kick-off start: you step on, push off, and the throttle only engages once you are coasting above 3.1 miles per hour. The listing bullets also describe a Hiboy app for the scooter.

Certification, warranty and the battery rule that voids it

On certification, the listing bullet says the product passed UL2272 certification and names UL LLC as the testing lab. Neither Hiboy's S2 MAX product page nor the pages of the user manual we read mentions UL 2272. Ask Hiboy for the certificate reference if that matters to you rather than taking the bullet alone.

Hiboy's warranty page describes a 12-month manufacturer warranty for the original owner covering manufacturing defects, with claims on Amazon purchases handled by Hiboy. The manual's warranty statement adds that remedies are repair or replacement using new or refurbished parts, that shipping and handling charges may apply, and that a replacement is covered for the remainder of the original term or 30 days, whichever is longer.

One exclusion deserves a calendar reminder. The manual says that if the scooter will be idle for more than 30 days you should fully charge it and recharge every 60 days, and that damage caused by prolonged no charge is irreversible and beyond the limited warranty. Hiboy also excludes battery capacity fading over time, damage caused by people or external factors, and will not accept shipping damage claims later than seven days after receipt.
