What the EV480 is and what is in the carton

Leviton's product page describes the EV480 as the EV Series Standard Level 2 charging station, 48 amps at 208 or 240 volts, 11.6 kW output, an SAE J1772 charge connector on an 18-foot cord, a mounting bracket and a pre-attached input cable, and it states in capitals that the unit is hardwired only. This is the version without Wi-Fi.

The shared EV Series installation manual lists what ships in the box: the AC charger with its charging cable, a user manual, a wall-mounted bracket, two M5 teeth screws, four M6 hexagonal expansion screws, two standard RFID cards and one administrator RFID card. The manual also lists tools the installer supplies, among them a wire stripper, a level, a drill and a multimeter.

Leviton's technical information lists the application as Home and Commercial, a cover held by Phillips head screws with no padlock option, and a status indicator covering power present, charging and fault. The same panel lists OCPP 1.6 compliance and cETLus among the standards the station is built to.

Hardwired only, on a 60 A breaker

Both Leviton documents give the same circuit figure. The product page's electrical specifications list a 60 A breaker, and the installation manual's warning page and circuit breaker options table both pair 48 A output with a 60 A breaker. If your panel cannot take a dedicated 60 A circuit, this model is not the one to order.

There is no plug version. The product page says hardwired only and the input cable is pre-attached, so an electrician connects it directly to the circuit. The product page lists the wiring as L1, L2 and ground with a bottom feed, which affects where the conduit or cable has to arrive on the wall.

The manual says the charger should be installed by a qualified technician according to local safety regulations and codes, and that a disconnect switch for each ungrounded conductor of the AC input is to be provided by others. Hand the manual to your electrician and let them work from it rather than from any summary.

RFID access control is a one-way switch

The listing says access control ships disabled and is activated by tapping the admin card, and the manual says RFID is disabled by default. The manual adds the part that matters before you tap anything: once RFID access control is enabled, it cannot be disabled. If you want an open charger that anyone in the household can just plug in, do not activate the admin card.

With access control on, the manual says a standard card is tapped to the card reader, the power light turns solid green, and the connector must go into the car within two minutes of the tap. The manual also tells you to press and hold the black button on the plug to insert or remove it, and to loop the cable over the station when you are done.

The manual's status light key gives blue for standby, steady green for waiting to charge, flashing green while charging and red for a fault, with a table of flash counts for each error. Faults that flash eight, nine or ten times are listed as contact customer service rather than auto recover.

Enclosure, temperature range and size

Leviton's product page gives a NEMA Type 3R enclosure in PC and PBT plastic, an operating temperature of minus 30 to 50 degrees Celsius for both the station and the charging cable, humidity under 95 percent non-condensing, natural cooling and an altitude limit of 6,500 feet. The same page lists a 20 mA CCID per UL 2231.

The installation manual's specification table repeats the temperature range as minus 22 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit and adds storage from minus 40 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit. That table describes the protection level as IK08 and IP54, which is a different way of describing the enclosure than the product page's NEMA Type 3R, and neither document reconciles the two.

The manual's dimensions page gives the charger as 14.2 inches by 9.8 inches by 3.4 inches, and its specification table gives 360.50 by 249.94 by 86.94 millimetres. Weight for the EV480 and EV48W is listed as 6.5 kilograms plus or minus 0.5, and the cable is 18 feet. Mounting is on a wall or a pedestal.

Where the three documents disagree

The listing's detail table puts Hardwire in the connector type row, while the listing title, Leviton's product page and the manual all give an SAE J1772 connector on the charging cable. Neither Leviton document explains that row, so read both descriptions and confirm what is on the cable before ordering any adapter.

Weight does not match. The manual gives 6.5 kilograms plus or minus half a kilogram for this model, which is about 14 pounds, while the listing's item weight reads 18.52 pounds. Neither document explains the gap or says what either figure measures, so plan the lift around the heavier of the two.

The RFID cards are another gap. The installation manual lists two standard cards and one administrator card among the contents for every model it covers, while Leviton's EV480 page describes access control as optional and names no cards. Check the carton rather than assuming, and contact Leviton if the cards are missing.

Two-year limited warranty and its exclusions

The manual's warranty page gives a limited two-year warranty to the original consumer purchaser, covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal and proper use for two years from the purchase date. Leviton's only obligation is repair or replacement at its option. The product page and the listing's warranty field both say 2-Year Limited, so all three agree.

The exclusions are worth reading before you book an installer. The warranty disclaims liability for the labour of removing or reinstalling the product, and it is void if the charger is installed improperly or in an improper environment, overloaded, misused, opened, abused or altered, or used outside its labels and instructions.

The manual also states that incorrect installation and testing could damage the vehicle's battery or the device and that any resulting damage is excluded from the warranty. Keep the purchase date, the installer's paperwork and the manual together, and claim through Leviton rather than through a reseller if something fails.
