The connected version of Leviton's EV Series
Leviton's product page calls the EV48W an EV Series Smart Home Level 2 charging station: 48 amps at 208 or 240 volts, 11.6 kW output, an SAE J1772 connector on an 18-foot cord, a mounting bracket, a pre-attached input cable, optional RFID control and Wi-Fi on 802.11 b, g and n. The page says in capitals that it is hardwired only.
The connectivity is what separates this model. Leviton's page carries a My Leviton Enabled feature line and lists the application as Home, and its document list adds a second instruction sheet covering the Wi-Fi models. The listing's first bullet describes the My Leviton app as covering load centre, lighting and charger.
The shared EV Series installation manual lists the carton contents as the AC charger with cable, a user manual, a wall-mounted bracket, two M5 teeth screws, four M6 hexagonal expansion screws, two standard RFID cards and one administrator card. The installer supplies a wire stripper, a level, a drill and a multimeter among other tools.
Hardwired, on a 60 A circuit
The number to check against your panel is the breaker. Leviton's electrical specifications for the EV48W list a 60 A breaker, and the installation manual pairs 48 A output with a 60 A breaker in both its warning page table and its circuit breaker options table. There is no plug-in variant of this model.
Leviton's page lists the wiring as L1, L2 and ground with a bottom feed, so the supply arrives at the bottom of the enclosure. The input cable is already attached and the mounting bracket is included, but the connection at the other end is still an electrician's job on a dedicated circuit.
The manual says the charger should be installed by a qualified technician in line with local building and electrical codes, and that a disconnect switch for each ungrounded conductor of the AC input is provided by others. Give the manual to whoever does the work and let them follow its wiring section directly.
Wi-Fi, RFID and the status lights
The manual's specification table lists the Wi-Fi function as 802.11 b, g and n for the Wi-Fi version, and an RJ45 LAN inlet at 10M or 100M Base-T on the LAN version. Its status light key adds a mode the plain models do not have: a flashing blue light for My Leviton setup mode, noted as applying to the EV32W, EV48W and EV80W only.
Access control ships disabled on every unit. The manual's caution is that once you hold the admin card to the reader and hear the beep, RFID access control is enabled and cannot be disabled. If the charger sits in a private garage and you want to just plug in, leave the admin card in a drawer.
With access control on, a standard card is tapped to the card reader, the power light turns solid green, and the connector must be plugged into the car within two minutes. The other lights are blue for standby, steady green for waiting to charge, flashing green while charging and red for a fault, with a flash-count table for each error code.
Ratings, size and weight
Leviton's page lists a NEMA Type 3R enclosure in PC and PBT plastic, an operating temperature of minus 30 to 50 degrees Celsius for the station and the cable alike, humidity under 95 percent non-condensing, natural cooling, an altitude limit of 6,500 feet and a 20 mA CCID per UL 2231. The cover uses Phillips head screws with no padlock option.
The manual's specification table gives the same temperature range in Fahrenheit as minus 22 to 122 degrees, adds storage from minus 40 to 158 degrees, and describes the protection level as IK08 and IP54. That is a different rating scheme from the page's NEMA Type 3R, and neither Leviton document says how the two relate.
For planning wall space, the manual's dimensions page gives 14.2 inches by 9.8 inches by 3.4 inches and its specification table gives 360.50 by 249.94 by 86.94 millimetres, with the EV480 and EV48W both at 6.5 kilograms plus or minus 0.5. Mounting is on a wall or a pedestal, and the cable is 18 feet.
The listing's electrical rows contradict each other
This listing's technical detail table is not internally consistent. It gives output and input voltage as 208 volts alternating current, a current rating of 2 A, and an amperage of 48 A on the next line. Leviton's own page and the manual both give 208 or 240 volts and 48 amps, so check the rating label on the unit rather than the listing rows.
Item weight is another gap. The listing reads 15.54 pounds while the manual gives 6.5 kilograms plus or minus half a kilogram for this model, which is roughly 14 pounds. We are not going to guess which measurement each figure describes, so use the manual's number when you are sizing a bracket and a wall.
The RFID cards also differ between documents. The installation manual lists two standard cards and one admin card as contents for every model it covers, while Leviton's EV48W page describes optional RFID control without naming any cards. Check the carton when it arrives and contact Leviton if the cards are not there.
Two-year limited warranty and its exclusions
The manual's warranty page gives a limited two-year warranty to the original consumer purchaser against defects in materials and workmanship under normal and proper use, running two years from the purchase date, with repair or replacement at Leviton's option. Leviton's product page and the listing's warranty field both say 2-Year Limited as well.
The warranty disclaims liability for the labour of removing or reinstalling the product, and it is void if the charger is installed improperly or in an improper environment, overloaded, misused, opened, abused or altered, or used outside its labels and instructions. The manual also says damage from incorrect installation or testing is excluded.
Keep the purchase date, the installer's paperwork and the manual together, and claim through Leviton rather than through a reseller if the hardware fails. Neither source we read describes app-side troubleshooting, so the manual's status lights and error table are the first place to look if the setup mode will not start.
