The listing bullets count three presets by adding hot water to espresso and coffee. Both descriptions point at the same short menu, so expect a simple machine rather than a long recipe list.

Using the classic milk frother

The manual has you dip the frother about 1 cm into a jug holding roughly 100 ml of milk for a cappuccino or 150 ml for a latte macchiato, and stop it with the button when the foam reaches the volume you want. Milk straight from the fridge is recommended.

Frothing stops automatically after 90 seconds and the manual says never to froth longer than that. After every use you dispense hot water through the attached frother, then remove and take it apart to clean the parts under the tap or in the dishwasher. Daily, once it has cooled, the metal and silicone parts come off and separate for rinsing.

Drinks, strength and pre-ground coffee

Each drink has three aroma strengths and three quantities, and the manual says only the highest quantity setting can be reprogrammed. Two cups can be brewed at once by tapping a drink icon twice on the panel.

Pre-ground coffee is selected by holding the aroma strength icon for three seconds, and that choice is not remembered: you repeat it for each cup. Only one coffee at a time can be made with pre-ground, and you cannot also pick an aroma strength for it.

The AquaClean filter

Philips says changing the AquaClean filter when prompted can put off descaling for up to 5,000 cups. The manual is specific about the conditions: the machine must already be free of limescale before you start using a filter, and each filter has to be activated with the AquaClean icon because the machine cannot detect it.

An orange flashing light means it is time to replace the filter; replace it while the light still flashes and no descaling is needed. If the light goes out first, you must descale before fitting a new filter. Set the water hardness with the supplied test strip, since the default setting is the hardest.

Brew group, grounds and descaling

The brew group comes out for a weekly rinse under the tap, a monthly clean with a Philips coffee oil remover tablet and lubrication with Philips grease every two months. The manual says to let it air-dry rather than wiping it.

Empty the grounds container when prompted and clean it weekly; its front panel is not dishwasher safe. Empty the drip tray daily or when the red float pops up, rinse the water tank weekly and clean the pre-ground compartment weekly. Descaling takes about 30 minutes with a 1.5 litre container, and the manual says to use Philips descaler only, warning that other descalers and skipped descaling void the warranty.

Figures and caveats

The manual covers the 1200, 2200 and 3200 series together and repeatedly says some icons, drinks and parts are for specific types only, including the LatteGo container that Philips does not list for this model. The type number is on a data label, so check it before assuming a feature applies.
