The EP4444/90 brews 12 hot and iced recipes, six of them on one-touch icons and the rest from a More Drinks menu, with LatteGo for milk and coloured profiles for saved settings. What this 4400 listing sells

This listing is model EP4444/90 in Cashmere Grey, and Philips has a US product page for that number. Philips describes 12 hot and iced recipes, LatteGo milk frothing and SilentBrew, which it says makes the machine 40 percent quieter than earlier models with a Quiet Mark certification.

The manual covering this type lists six one-touch icons for the 4000 series: espresso, coffee, americano, iced coffee, cappuccino and latte macchiato. The rest of the 12 recipes sit behind a 'More Drinks' menu reached from the display, so the panel is shorter than the recipe count suggests.

Profiles, strength and ExtraShot

Drinks have five aroma strengths and five quantity steps. Settings are stored automatically in whichever coloured profile is selected when the drink finishes, and a guest profile lets someone else brew without changing your saved recipes.

An ExtraShot function adds a ristretto shot to coffee and milk drinks: set the strength to its top level, then select ExtraShot. The manual notes that with ExtraShot chosen you can only brew one coffee at a time.

LatteGo and iced drinks

LatteGo froths milk automatically, and Philips's page says its cyclonic frothing works with plant-based alternatives too. After each use, run the Quick milk clean program with LatteGo still attached, then remove it and rinse it or put it in the dishwasher.

For iced drinks the manual says to fill a glass two-thirds with ice cubes first and recommends aroma strength 3. Pre-ground coffee takes one level scoop in its own compartment and is selected either from the lowest strength step or through the settings menu.

AquaClean filter rules

With AquaClean active, the display shows the filter's remaining life as a percentage. At 10 percent or less the machine suggests buying a new filter, and at 0 percent it asks for a replacement every time you switch on. A filter stops working after 95 litres have passed through it.

Replace it while the status indicator is still shown and no descaling is needed first; if the indicator disappears, you must descale before the new filter. The manual also says to replace the filter at least every three months even if the machine has not asked. Each new filter is activated from the Clean menu, with about a minute of hot water dispensed.

Brew group, cleaning and descaling

The brew group comes out for a weekly rinse and lubrication with Philips grease every two months. Empty the grounds container when prompted and clean it weekly, keeping its front panel out of the dishwasher; empty the drip tray daily or when the red float appears; rinse the water tank weekly and wipe the machine front weekly.

Descaling takes about 30 minutes and ends with installing a new AquaClean filter. The manual says to use only Philips maintenance products, naming descaling solution CA6700, AquaClean filter CA6903, brew group grease HD5061 and coffee oil remover tablets CA6704, and states that Brita filters are not compatible with this machine.

Listing figures and cautions

The listing gives 1,500 watts at 120 volts, a 1.8 litre capacity, dimensions of 9.68 inches deep by 17.04 wide by 14.6 high, 17.63 pounds, a 15 bar pump and QuickStart readiness in three seconds. Philips's page header states a two-year warranty. The listing also mentions saving up to two profiles.

The manual warns against caramelised or flavoured coffee beans in the hopper, and says the type number is on a data label inside the service door. Because the same book covers the 4400 and 5500 series, check that label before assuming a feature shown in the manual belongs to your machine.
