Ricardo Beverly Hills Montecito 3.0 21-Inch Softside Carry-On Spinner, French Gray

Travellers who want a softside spinner with a built-in TSA lock and tracker pocket

The Montecito 3.0 21-inch spinner measures 23 by 15.5 by 10.75 inches outside, weighs 7.9 pounds and expands by 1.5 inches. It has a built-in TSA lock, two compartments and a hidden tracker pocket. Amazon's size table is wrong for this bag, and Ricardo's two pages describe wheel and zipper coverage differently.

Which bag this listing is

This listing is the 21-inch carry-on spinner from Ricardo Beverly Hills' Montecito 3.0 softside collection in the French Gray colour. Amazon gives the model and part number as 165-21-071-4WB with UPC 018982165310, and Ricardo's own product page lists exactly that SKU and barcode for its French Grey variant, so the match to the maker's page is firm.

Ricardo's variant data also lists this bag in Graphite (165-21-029-4WB) and Hunter Green (165-21-385-4WB). Only the French Grey SKU and barcode are matched to this listing, so check the SKU if you buy another colour from a different offer.

The size figures, and the listing's wrong table

Ricardo gives the exterior as 23 inches high, 15.5 wide and 10.75 deep (58.5 by 39.5 by 27.5 centimetres), and the interior packing space as 20.75 by 14.75 by 9.25 inches. The listing bullets repeat both sets of numbers correctly. The weight is 7.9 pounds in both sources; Ricardo's page converts that to 3.5 kilograms in one place and 3.6 in another.

Amazon's item details table is a different matter. It lists 18.5 by 12 by 27.75 inches, which does not match the 21-inch bag at all and is the same set of numbers Ricardo's size guide gives for the 25-inch Medium Check-In. Ignore that table line when you check this bag against a sizer.

One listing bullet says the compact profile aligns with many 22 by 14 by 9 inch airline guidelines. The exterior Ricardo publishes is larger than 22 by 14 by 9 in every one of the three numbers. Ricardo's own FAQ says only that the bag is sized to meet most major airline overhead requirements and tells you to check your airline's specific policy, especially on regional or budget carriers.

Wheels, handles, lock and shell

The 21-inch bag rolls on recessed 360-degree dual spinner wheels, and Amazon's table counts eight wheels. Ricardo's page says the recessed wheels sit flush with the case rather than standing out from the corners, and it gives no wheel diameter.

There is a patented telescoping handle, padded top and side carry handles and a bottom carry grip. The TSA-approved combination lock is built into the case, and the main compartment has lockable zippers and locking sliders. Ricardo's FAQ says the built-in lock is on the 21, 25 and 29-inch spinners, which includes this size.

The shell is a softside blend of recycled rPET and polyester with a water-repellent treatment, corner protectors, a bottom skid guard, faux-leather accents and a retracting ID holder. Water-repellent is the maker's term, and the warranty page separately excludes damage from exposure to water.

Packing layout and expansion

Inside there are two packing compartments, adjustable compression straps, four zippered mesh and lining pockets, a removable toiletry bag and a laundry bag. Outside there are four quick-access pockets. Amazon's table counts seven pockets in total, while Ricardo's page counts four interior and four exterior, so expect the maker's layout rather than the table figure.

A hidden tech tracker pocket takes an Apple AirTag, Tile or Samsung SmartTag according to Ricardo's FAQ, and the tracker is not included. Ricardo's page describes the tracker pocket as a feature of select spinner sizes, and the listing bullet for this 21-inch bag names the pocket, so both sources place it on this size.

The expansion adds 1.5 inches (4 centimetres) of depth, which Ricardo describes as roughly 25 percent more capacity and designed for the return leg. Neither Ricardo page gives an expanded exterior depth or says the expanded bag still fits an overhead bin, so check your airline's limit before you board with the expansion open.

Cleaning and storage

Ricardo's care text says to clean the bag with a soft sponge or cloth and water or a mild household detergent, and to avoid products containing bleach, acetone or ammonia, and abrasive sponges. That matters because the warranty page excludes stains and colour changes.

For sticky zippers the maker suggests scrubbing with warm water and a little dish soap, rinsing and drying, then rubbing the teeth lightly with pencil lead as a dry lubricant. Store the bag upright in a dry place away from extreme temperatures; Ricardo says the sizes in this collection nest inside each other to save space.

What the warranty actually covers

Ricardo advertises a 10-year limited warranty on this collection. Its warranty page says the period is ten, five or three years depending on the series, runs from the purchase date, applies to the original purchaser or gift recipient, and requires proof of purchase from an authorised Ricardo store or dealer. Check that the seller of the offer you choose counts as authorised, and keep the receipt.

The two maker pages word the coverage differently. The product FAQ says the warranty covers zipper failures, wheel issues and handle malfunctions under normal use. The warranty page excludes normal wear and tear and says wheels, handles and zippers will show normal wear and may need repair or replacement with time. Ask Ricardo which reading applies before you rely on a wheel or zipper claim.

Both pages agree that airline or other carrier damage is not covered, and the warranty page also excludes misuse, neglect, extreme temperatures, solvents, water, unauthorised repairs and cosmetic damage such as fabric catches, stains and colour changes. Travel essentials such as toiletry and laundry bags carry a separate one-year limited warranty.
