The Amazon listing is sold by Amazon.com and gives model number TFB78GLEC. Traeger's Pro 780 Support Guide lists TFB78GLE as the black Pro 780 for the US and TFB78GLEC as the black Pro 780 for Canada, both active, and the cover of Traeger's current Pro Series owner's manual lists TFB78GLEC among its Pro 780 codes. Traeger's Pro 780 product page prints TFB78GLE.
Traeger's documents read here do not say how the Canadian and US versions differ. The manual's warranty text addresses buyers in the United States and Canada and requires purchase from traeger.com or a Traeger authorized dealer, so ask Traeger whether this offer is covered before relying on the warranty. Traeger's FAQ says the difference between the Pro 780 and the Pro 575 is 780 square inches against 575.
780 square inches, an 18 or 19 pound hopper and a weight gap
Traeger's page gives 780 square inches of total cooking space on two tiers of porcelain-coated steel grates, room for 34 burgers, 6 rib racks or 6 chickens, an 18 pound pellet hopper and a 165°F to 500°F range. Traeger's support guide splits the space into a 30 by 19 inch main grate of 570 square inches and a 30 by 7 inch upper grate of 210 square inches, and gives the hopper as 19 pounds; the manual says 18.
The page gives a total weight of 150 pounds, the support guide gives 145 pounds assembled and 173 pounds packaged, and Amazon's table gives 166.7 pounds and 27 by 49 by 55 inches. The support guide gives assembled dimensions of 48.7 by 26.7 by 54.4 inches, and the manual's parts list shows swivel casters on the 780's rear legs. The listing also describes a D2 drivetrain with a brushless motor, which neither Traeger's page nor its manual mentions; the page names a D2 Controller.
Power, Wi-Fi and the controller
Traeger's page gives 120V AC and 95 watts with an included 6-foot power cord. The manual says GFCI protection must be provided on the circuit or outlet used to power the grill, and that any extension cord must be an outdoor type marked W-A or W and a No. 14 AWG grounded cord, so check for a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet before you buy.
The WiFIRE controller connects through the Traeger app. The manual says a home Wi-Fi connection is needed to connect the grill to the internet, a data plan when you leave its range, and that the grill must stay connected to receive the latest operating, safety and security updates; Traeger's FAQ says a WiFIRE grill can be used without an internet connection. One meat probe is included, the controller has a timer and a Keep Warm function that holds 165°F, and the probe offset can be set from -15°F to +15°F.
Clearance, placement and carbon monoxide
The manual sets a minimum of 18 inches from the grill to any nearby combustibles, naming wooden railings, home siding, window frames, furniture, trees and trash receptacles. It says not to install or operate the grill indoors, under a combustible ceiling or overhang, or on a combustible floor or surface, and never to move it while it is operating or hot.
It warns about carbon monoxide poisoning, lists symptoms such as headache, dizziness and nausea, and says to see a doctor if you or others develop cold- or flu-like symptoms. Read the safety pages of the manual in full before first use, because they also cover grease fires, pellet overflow and burns.
Pellets, cleaning and the error thresholds
Traeger's manual is not consistent on pellets: its seasoning and cooking pages say to use only Traeger-brand hardwood pellets, while its safety page approves all-natural wood cooking pellets made for pellet grills and recommends Traeger's for best results. It never allows heating fuel pellets, and its warranty is void if any other fuel is used. The hopper clean-out door lets you swap flavours, and the manual says to clean the ash from the firepot every 20 hours of use when the grill is cold and to inspect the downdraft exhaust at least twice a year.
The manual says wet pellets expand and jam the auger, so cover the grill when stored outside, and it asks you to clean the outside with Traeger All Natural Cleaner every 90 days. It lists a High Temp Error above 550°F for more than 45 seconds and a Low Temp Error below 120°F for 10 minutes, and says Temp Sensor Out means the controller has lost its thermocouple reading.
Warranty and where the sources disagree
Traeger's page describes a 3-year warranty, but the current manual gives a 7-year limited warranty split by part: body, legs and hopper cover 7 years against rusting through; grates 3 years against rusting through; auger motor, fan, controller and casters 3 years; hot rod, cord, RTD and thermocouple 1 year; heat baffle and drip tray 1 year against rusting through; door gasket and meat probe 1 year. Traeger's remedy is replacement parts that you fit yourself, with labor and freight at your expense.
The manual says the warranty is void if the grill is not bought from traeger.com or a Traeger authorized dealer, is resold, is used with third-party parts or other fuels, is used commercially, is not maintained or is modified, and Traeger asks for proof of purchase from an authorized seller. Check the seller against Traeger's dealer list, and confirm the weight, the hopper size and the Canadian code with Traeger before you buy.
