A two-wheel upright, whatever the size label says
This is the Maxlite 5 Carry-On Rollaboard, Travelpro's two-wheel upright. Model 401172201 is the Black colour on Travelpro's own page for the Rollaboard. It rolls on two wheels that Travelpro describes as high-performance ball bearing wheels, and Amazon's table records two in-line skate wheels.
The size naming is inconsistent. The listing calls it Carry-on 21-Inch, while Travelpro's page address and page title call it a 22-inch Rollaboard, and the listing description also says 22 inches. The measurements underneath agree, so ignore the label and use the numbers below.
One listing bullet says the two in-line wheels ensure smooth rolling in any direction. Travelpro's own page makes no any-direction claim for this bag, describing only a smooth, easy roll that it says has been rigorously tested, so treat the listing wording with caution.
Dimensions, weight and capacity
Travelpro's Dimensions panel gives the case body as 21 by 14 by 9 inches and the overall size, which includes wheels and carry handles, as 23 inches high by 14.5 inches wide by 9 inches deep. The listing bullet repeats both, but Amazon's Measurements table gives only the 21 by 14 by 9 inch case body.
Weight is 5.4 pounds and volume is 52 litres, and Travelpro, the listing bullet and Amazon's table all agree on both. The listing also says the bag is half a pound lighter than the Maxlite 4 that came before it, which is the seller's claim and is not repeated on Travelpro's page.
Travelpro states that the bag has been sizer-bin tested for overhead bin space on most major US airlines and describes it as offering domestic carry-on convenience. A listing bullet instead says it meets most international carry-on size limits. Those claims are not verified here, so compare the 23-inch overall figure with each airline's current published limit.
The lock: listed by Amazon, not by Travelpro
Amazon's Features & Specs table for this ASIN gives a lock type of TSA Lock. None of the five listing bullets or the description mentions a lock, and Travelpro's product page for the Rollaboard does not describe a built-in lock anywhere in its feature list, feature blocks or FAQ.
Travelpro's page data for this product records the lock type as zipper, which is a different thing from an integrated combination lock. We are not going to guess which is right, so do not buy this bag assuming it locks. Plan on a separate travel lock through the zipper pulls, or ask Travelpro about SKU 401172201 first.
Travelpro does describe ergonomic, high-tensile-strength zipper pulls that it says are tough yet easy on the hands. Zippers are one of the four components named in the lifetime warranty, along with wheels, extension handles and carrying handles.
Fabric, handle, expansion and packing layout
The shell is polyester with a DuraGuard coating that Travelpro says resists water, stains and abrasion. The ECOFAB lining is made from recycled plastic bottles and treated with H2O Guard. Travelpro's FAQ includes cleaning directions for the fabric, which you should read on Travelpro's own page.
The PowerScope Lite handle locks in two positions only, 38 and 42.5 inches. The bag expands by up to two inches, and Travelpro says the tapered shape keeps the centre of gravity low to prevent tipping. Travelpro warns that a fully expanded carry-on may not meet airline restrictions and suggests boarding unexpanded where sizers are enforced.
Travelpro lists a full-length interior lid pocket, a side accessory pocket and adjustable hold-down straps. The listing adds two exterior quick-access pockets and top, side and bottom handles. Amazon's table counts six pockets and four sections. Neither source gives a maximum packed weight.
How long the airline-damage cover lasts depends on the document
The Trusted Companion Promise pays for repair of damage caused by an airline or other common carrier, plus shipping to a Travelpro repair facility, in the country of purchase. Registration within 120 days of delivery or gift receipt is the condition in every Travelpro document we read.
The duration is where they disagree. Travelpro's Maxlite 5 warranty page says the promise is valid for the period the product is owned by the original purchaser or gift recipient. Travelpro's duration table lists Maxlite 5 at the first year only, the warranty panel on the product page says the first year, and the listing says one year.
This page reports both terms rather than choosing one. Until Travelpro confirms otherwise, the cautious assumption is the shorter one-year term, so ask Travelpro to confirm it when you register the bag. Keep your receipt or registration, because proof of purchase is required either way.
Lifetime warranty terms and claims
Travelpro's Maxlite 5 warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship that negatively impact function, including wheels, zippers, extension handles and carrying handles, for as long as the original purchaser or gift recipient owns the bag. Travelpro repairs the bag, or replaces it with a product of comparable value if it decides repair is not feasible.
It excludes abrasions, scratches, dents or stains that do not impair function, normal wear and tear, damage from abuse, mishandling or accidents, and damage caused by an airline, train service, cruise ship or other common carrier. Loss of contents and similar incidental costs are excluded, and professional flight crews get three years instead of lifetime.
Claims go through an authorised repair centre with proof of purchase, or by shipment arranged with Customer Service if you registered within 120 days. If you did not register in time, shipping the bag to the facility is at your cost; Travelpro pays to send the repaired or replacement bag back.
