Fit and limits

Strengths

  • Packing cubes, two shoe bags, a laundry bag and a zipper repair kit are included
  • Built-in TSA lock confirmed by both Travelpro and the listing
  • Three years of airline-damage repair cover after registration

Caveats

  • Weight is 7.7 lb per Travelpro but 10.78 lb per Amazon's table
  • Overall 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 in, above the 22 x 14 x 9 limit Travelpro itself lists
  • Amazon's table shows an 18 in width that Travelpro's figures do not support

What comes in the bag

The VersaPack+ is sold on its packing accessories. Travelpro says it includes a compression packing cube system, two removable shoe bags and a removable laundry bag, plus a built-in wet pocket. The listing's Included Components row names compression packing cubes, two shoe bags, one laundry bag, one repair kit and one TSA lock.

Travelpro describes the packing cube system as helping to organise, compress, secure and divide contents. It also says the bag uses YKK zippers and that a YKK zipper repair kit is included, which matches the repair kit in the listing's components row, so check that it is in the box when you unpack.

Travelpro's description positions the bag for short or medium-length trips. Neither the listing nor Travelpro gives a maximum packed weight, so the 47-litre volume that both publish is the only capacity figure you have to work with.

Size: use the overall figure, not Amazon's table

Travelpro's Dimensions panel gives the case body as 20.5 by 13.75 by 9 inches and the overall size, including wheels and carry handles, as 23 inches high by 14.5 inches wide by 9.5 inches deep. The listing bullet repeats the same two sets of figures.

Amazon's Measurements table for this ASIN gives 9.5 by 18 by 23 inches, a width of 18 inches that appears in no other document we read. We are not going to guess where it came from. Rely on Travelpro's overall dimensions, and compare all three of them with your airline's current published limit.

Travelpro's FAQ acknowledges that the 23-inch height is slightly above the 22 by 14 by 9 inch limit it lists for American, Delta and United, and states the bag is sizer-bin tested and still fits their sizers and bins on mainline aircraft. That is the maker's claim, not something verified here.

Weight: two very different figures

Travelpro's Dimensions panel gives the weight as 7.7 pounds. Amazon's Measurements table for this ASIN gives 10.78 pounds. The listing bullets do not state a weight. That is a difference of about three pounds, which matters on any airline that weighs cabin bags.

We are not going to decide which figure is right or guess whether one includes the packing accessories. Neither document says. If weight is part of your decision, ask Travelpro to confirm the weight of SKU 417246106, and whether that figure includes the cubes, shoe bags and laundry bag.

Volume is less contentious: Travelpro's Dimensions panel and Amazon's table both give 47 litres. The tapered zippered expansion adds up to two inches of packing space, and Travelpro warns that a fully expanded carry-on may not meet airline restrictions.

Lock, wheels, handle and fabric

The bag has a built-in TSA-compliant lock. Travelpro says it lets authorities unlock and relock the bag for inspection and that the default code is set to 0-0-0, and the listing agrees on both points. Travelpro's page, as read, does not describe how to change the code, so follow the instructions supplied with the bag or ask Travelpro.

Travelpro describes eight 360-degree MagnaTrac self-aligning spinner wheels and an airline-grade PowerScope extension handle with Contour Grip; Amazon's table also records eight wheels. The listing calls the handle 4-stop, but Travelpro's page does not list the stop heights, so confirm them with Travelpro if they matter to you.

The exterior is high-density ballistic nylon with a DuraGuard coating that Travelpro says resists stains and abrasion, and its FAQ says the coating also resists water. The ECOFAB lining with H2O Guard is made from recycled plastic bottles, which Travelpro puts at 12.5 bottles for this bag.

Airline-damage cover: three years

The Trusted Companion Promise pays for repair of damage caused by an airline or other common carrier, plus shipping to a Travelpro repair facility, in the country of purchase. For VersaPack+, Travelpro's warranty page body, its duration table, the product description, the product page warranty panel and the listing all give three years.

One line disagrees. The summary box at the top of Travelpro's VersaPack+ warranty page says the promise is valid for the period the product is owned by the original purchaser or gift recipient, while the detailed text below it on the same page says three years. This page reports both statements rather than choosing one; the three-year figure is the more cautious assumption, so confirm the term with Travelpro when you register.

Registration within 120 days of delivery or gift receipt is required. Note also that the product page FAQ says this bag is covered by the Crew VersaPack warranty, a different collection name from the VersaPack+ warranty page linked above; ask Travelpro which terms apply if that matters to a claim.

Lifetime warranty terms and how to claim

Travelpro's VersaPack+ warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship that negatively impact function, including wheels, zippers, extension handles and carrying handles, for as long as the original purchaser or gift recipient owns the bag. Proof of purchase is required, and Travelpro also recommends registering the bag.

It excludes abrasions, scratches, dents or stains that do not impair function, normal wear and tear, damage from abuse, mishandling or accidents, and damage caused by an airline, train service, cruise ship or other common carrier, which is instead handled by the separate promise above. Loss of contents is excluded, and flight crews get three years.

To claim, drop the bag at an authorised repair centre with proof of purchase, or contact Customer Service to arrange shipment if you registered within 120 days. Unregistered owners pay to ship the bag in; Travelpro pays to send the repaired or replacement bag back.
