The one Waterpik that never needs a charger
The Cordless Express runs on replaceable AA cells rather than a built-in rechargeable battery. Waterpik's page for WF-02W010 lists two flossing tips, a pressure control system with two settings, a reservoir capacity of up to 30 seconds, a battery-operated design needing no outlet or charging, and a waterproof body that may be used in the shower.
For travel that means no cable, no adapter and no charge time, which is the whole argument for it. The listing gives the reservoir as 5 fluid ounces and the unit as 3.6 by 2.5 by 11.75 inches at 11.7 ounces, with the reservoir sliding off the power handle rather than sitting on a base.
It also means a running cost. Waterpik's manual says typical battery life is at least 40 usages, and the listing's own bullet suggests replacing the batteries every one to two months at once-a-day use depending on battery quality. The manual adds that the type and quality of AA battery used will affect how the product performs.
Which batteries, and which ones will void the warranty
Waterpik is unusually direct here. The manual says not to use lithium batteries in this product, because they are capable of producing pressures that may be uncomfortable and may damage the appliance, and states that using them will void the warranty. Waterpik's page says to replace with alkaline and NiMH batteries only.
Beyond that, the manual's battery care notes are practical: insert cells with the correct polarity, replace all of them at the same time with new batteries of the same type and brand, remove exhausted cells and dispose of them properly, do not short the supply terminals, do not put batteries in a fire, and take the batteries out if the flosser will sit unused for a long period.
There is one confusing row on the listing. Its Included Components field reads two Classic Jet tips JT-450E and three AAA batteries, while the title, the bullets, the description and Waterpik's own page all say three AA batteries. We are not going to guess which is the slip; check the cells in the box against the manual's AA instruction before buying replacements.
The petroleum jelly step people miss
Fitting batteries is a small routine rather than a flip-open door. The manual says to remove the water reservoir, twist the battery door from locked to unlocked and pull it away, insert three AA batteries as shown, then line up the arrows, push and twist to refit the door.
The step that is easy to skip is the seal. Waterpik marks it important: use petroleum jelly to lubricate the battery cap sealing surface at every battery change, applying a thin even film to the battery cap o-ring and another to the battery compartment sealing surface. On a flosser sold for shower use, that seal is what keeps water out of the cells.
Waterpik says to replace the batteries when the flosser is no longer effective rather than on a fixed schedule. Keep a small tub of petroleum jelly with the spare batteries so the seal job and the battery change happen at the same time.
Using it: a slider with two clicks
Pressure and power are the same control. The manual says to slide the power switch on the handle up one click for low pressure and two clicks for high, with off at the bottom. Filling is through a flip top on the reservoir with lukewarm water, and the reservoir slides down off the power handle if you want to clean it separately.
Tips push into the centre of the knob at the top of the handle and the coloured ring sits flush with the end of the knob when a tip is locked in; the eject button and a pull release it. Waterpik says to keep the unit upright during use and to lean low over the sink.
The manual also prints a short technique section and a per-tip guide, which belong in Waterpik's own document rather than in a summary here. When you finish, the manual says to switch off and empty any liquid left in the reservoir.
Tips, mouthwash and cleaning
The manual's tip chart marks the Orthodontic tip, the Plaque Seeker tip and the Toothbrush tip for replacement every three months, and the Classic Jet tip and the Tongue Cleaner every six, with a note that not all tips are included in all models. The listing says two Classic Jet tips JT-450E come in this box.
Mouthwash and antibacterial solutions can be run through the flosser, and the manual says to rinse afterwards with warm water to prevent clogging. Fill only with warm water or a solution your dental professional recommends, and avoid iodine, saline and water-insoluble concentrated essential oils.
Never immerse the unit. Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and a mild non-abrasive cleanser, and remove the reservoir for cleaning, which Waterpik says is top-rack dishwasher safe and should be cleaned weekly. Hard water deposits get a white vinegar and warm water run-through every one to three months using the proportions printed in the manual.
Warranty and what to check on arrival
Waterpik's page and the listing's warranty field agree on a limited one-year warranty for this model, with the page pointing readers to the owner's manual for details. The manual's own warning about lithium cells is the exclusion most likely to catch someone out, since it is a choice you make months after purchase.
The listing's manufacturer field reads AmazonUs rather than Water Pik, Inc., while the manual and Waterpik's product page are both Waterpik documents for model WF-02. Treat Waterpik's page and manual as the reference for what the product is, and keep the receipt for any warranty claim.
Two things to check as soon as the box is open: that the cells supplied are the AA type the manual asks for, and that you have petroleum jelly to hand for the first battery change. Both are easier to sort out before the flosser is first used.
