A cordless handheld aimed squarely at travel
The Cordless Gem 5100 is Waterpik's handheld unit in blue, model WF-27CD013, with the reservoir on the handle and no base or hose. Waterpik's page for that model number lists three flossing tips, a travel bag, EasySpin 360-degree tip rotation, a narrow hand grip, two pressure settings and a waterproof body that may be used in the shower.
The listing gives the reservoir as 7 fluid ounces with up to 60 seconds of flossing per fill, and the unit as 3.9 by 2.5 by 11.75 inches at 11 ounces. It names the three tips as one Precision tip for everyday use, one Orthodontic tip and one Plaque Seeker tip.
Waterpik describes the design as extra quiet and portable and adds a battery recharge indicator and a narrow hand grip. The listing's description calls the included travel bag a microfiber bag, and Waterpik's own feature list names a travel bag among this model's features.
Travel mode, and the lockout reset
Travel mode is the feature worth buying this model for if the flosser lives in a suitcase. Waterpik's instructions say to press and hold the power button for five seconds until the LEDs start flashing to enable it, and the same press and hold to disable it. Its job is to stop the flosser switching itself on in a bag.
The instructions also give a lockout reset for when the unit stops responding. Hold the power button for 20 seconds: the top two LEDs flash three times, then all three mode lights turn solid while the charge light flashes.
Starting a session is done from the power button rather than from a switch. The instructions say one press starts low pressure and two presses give high. The EasySpin rotator changes the direction of the tip with a single touch.
Charging and what you must supply
Waterpik gives the battery as 5.18 watt hours and says a full charge lasts up to nine weeks of typical use, with an initial charge of about four hours before first use. The listing repeats the nine weeks and describes the included USB-C to USB-A cable as charging from a laptop, car, power bank or wall adapter.
The wall adapter itself is not included. The instructions call for a user-supplied USB-C wall charger, safety certified to IPX4, with a rated output of 5.0 volts at 3.0 amps maximum, and Waterpik's page repeats that the adapter is not in the box. Contacts on the cord, unit and adapter should be clean and dry while charging.
The charge light reads flashing white as the battery gets low, solid red when depleted, glowing while charging and solid when full until the cable is unplugged. Waterpik also says to replace the charge port cover after charging so it sits flush with the handle, and to remove the charging cord and refit the cover before filling the reservoir.
Tips and their replacement clock
The WF-27 Series replacement table splits the intervals in an order worth reading rather than assuming. It gives three months for the Orthodontic tip OD-100E and the Pik Pocket tip PP-100E, and six months for the Plaque Seeker tip PS-100E, the Precision tip JT-450E and the Tongue Cleaner TC-100E.
Two of the three tips in this box therefore sit in the six-month column, and one of them, the Orthodontic tip, in the three-month column. The instructions also give the charging cable part number 20034096-2 in white if the cable goes missing.
Tips press in until they click and come out with the eject button, which the instructions say should not be pressed while the unit is running. Fill through the flip top with lukewarm water and keep the unit upright during use.
Cleaning, temperatures and the sealed battery
Never immerse the unit. Before cleaning, disconnect the charging cable and replace the charge port cover, then wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and a mild non-abrasive cleanser. The reservoir comes off and is top-rack dishwasher safe with air drying recommended over a heated cycle, and Waterpik suggests cleaning it weekly.
Hard water is handled with a white vinegar and warm water run-through every one to three months using the proportions printed in the instructions. The instructions also say not to use iodine, saline or water-insoluble concentrated essential oils, and set a usage limit of five minutes in any two-hour period.
Waterpik gives an operating ambient range of 41 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit and a charging range of 41 to 95 degrees, with short-term storage including transport from 14 to 140 degrees and long-term storage recommended between 50 and 77 degrees. The lithium-ion battery is not replaceable, and Waterpik says removing it is irreversible and voids the warranty.
Two-year warranty and the small print
Water Pik warrants the product to the original consumer against defects in materials and workmanship for two years from the date of purchase, asks for the original receipt and, if requested, the whole product, and replaces at its discretion rather than repairing. The listing's warranty field and Waterpik's page both say two years.
Accessories and consumable parts such as tips are excluded, use with improper voltage voids the warranty, and cover does not apply if the product was abused, misused, altered or damaged after purchase or used with accessories Waterpik has not approved. Users are also prohibited from dismantling the flosser or altering its internal wiring or protective systems.
The instructions carry a binding arbitration clause administered by the American Arbitration Association with Colorado as the venue and a class-action waiver. Read that section in Waterpik's own document before you buy if arbitration terms matter to you.
