What comes in the box and how the filters stack
The 5520 is Winix's Wi-Fi version of a four-stage purifier that shares one manual with the 5510. The package listed in the manual holds the unit, a pre-filter, an AOC carbon filter, a True HEPA filter, the user manual and a Wi-Fi setup guide. The fourth stage is PlasmaWave, which the manual says sleep mode switches off.
The manual lists the replacement filter as Filter Q, SKU 1712-0123-00, with the carbon and HEPA filters each lasting approximately 12 months. The Amazon included-components field names a 5510 unit, which conflicts with the 5520 title, so check the model label on the unit when it arrives.
392 square feet is the verified figure; 1,882 is an hourly claim
Winix's page lists AHAM Verified room size as 392 square feet at 4.8 air changes per hour, based on tobacco smoke removal with eight-foot ceilings. The larger 1,882 square feet is Winix's figure for one air change per hour, alongside 941 square feet in 30 minutes, so treat it as a slower single pass.
The two sources order the CADR figures differently. Winix's specification table lists dust, pollen and smoke as 252, 247 and 253; the Amazon table gives dust 253, smoke 252 and pollen 247. The Amazon bullet also cites particles as small as 0.01 microns, while Winix's page says 0.1 to 0.3 microns under the IEST-RP-CC0007 test.
Placement: 12 to 18 inches of clear space
The manual asks for 12 to 18 inches between the unit and walls for airflow, and says never closer than 12 inches from a wall while running because condensation can form. It also wants 12 to 18 inches from TVs, radios and other electronics, so plan a spot with clear space on every side.
The manual lists the unit at 13.59 by 8.27 by 22.17 inches, and Winix's page gives 13.3 pounds, matching the Amazon table. The Amazon dimensions field gives 8.3 by 13.6 by 22.7 inches, which is close to the manual's figures but not identical, so allow a little margin when planning a shelf.
Filter schedule and running costs you control
The manual's filter table says to clean the pre-filter every 14 days. The carbon filter cannot be washed. Both the carbon and HEPA filters last approximately 12 months, and the manual gives the replacement as Filter Q, so budget one filter set per year in normal use.
After fitting new filters, hold the Filter Reset button for five seconds. The manual also asks for the interior to be cleaned every one to two months. It lists 65 watts at 120 volts; the Amazon table lists 50 watts, so treat the lower figure with caution.
Auto mode, sleep mode and PlasmaWave
Auto mode uses the unit's smart sensor to set the fan low, medium or high, and the manual says the sensor takes about four minutes after power-up before normal operation. Winix's page lists five fan speeds and dual smart sensors. Sleep mode turns off the air-quality light and PlasmaWave.
The manual states the product complies with a maximum ozone concentration of 0.050 parts per million over 24 hours, and Winix's page gives an eight-hour average of 0.22 parts per billion in a chamber test and lists CARB among its certifications. Winix's own wording about ozone is a maker claim we do not repeat.
Two-year warranty and no repair service
Both the manual and Winix's page give a two-year limited warranty from the purchase date, valid in the USA and Canada and requiring proof of purchase. The manual states that repair services are not available, so a defective unit is handled through the warranty rather than a repair.
The manual also states that no spare parts will be made available after the warranty expires. Keep your receipt, since a claim needs proof of purchase, and expect to replace rather than repair the unit once the two years have passed.
