Half a horsepower, with a footnote the maker prints itself

The C2212T is a chain drive opener with a DC motor, built-in Wi-Fi and a battery backup. Chamberlain's spec block lists motor power as 1/2 HP and drive type as chain, and confirms soft start and stop, Security+ 2.0 code compatibility and a yellow learn button.

Chamberlain attaches its own caveat to that half-horsepower figure. The footnote on the product page says the rating is for comparison purposes only, that lift capacity is similar to a 1-1/4 or 3/4 horsepower AC motor, and that lift capacity of DC motors is typically not measured in horsepower. Quote the footnote, not just the number, when you compare openers.

Neither Chamberlain's page for this model nor the manual pages we read states a maximum door height. The replacement parts list offers a seven-foot rail kit and a seven-foot chain and cable kit, so if your door is taller than that, ask Chamberlain what is available before ordering.

The backup battery works, but it switches several features off

Chamberlain states the battery backup meets California SB-969, and the manual describes a 12-volt battery, Chamberlain part G4228, that charges from the wall outlet and needs 24 hours for a full charge. A fully charged battery is said to supply the opener for up to 24 hours of normal operation during an outage.

What the listing does not tell you is what stops working. The manual states that while the opener is running on battery power, the opener lights, myQ app control and monitoring, and unattended close including the Timer-to-Close feature are all disabled, the opener may run slower, and it beeps every two seconds.

The battery is a consumable. The manual says it lasts approximately one to two years with normal use, and uses a status LED whose colours indicate the battery's condition.

The remote in the box is described two different ways

Chamberlain's what's-included block for C2212T lists the battery backup system battery, a push button door control, a safety sensor kit and a three-button visor garage door remote. The Amazon included-components field instead says a one-button remote, along with the battery backup, push button door control and safety sensors.

Those are not the same remote, and neither source explains the difference. If the number of buttons matters, because you want a second door or a light on the same handset, confirm with the seller which remote ships rather than assuming the richer description.

Both sources agree that safety sensors are included, and the manual is blunt about them: the cover says the door will not close unless the Protector System is connected and aligned.

Preparation work the manual expects before the opener goes up

Before installation the manual wants locks disabled and ropes removed, the door lifted halfway and released to confirm it stays put on its springs, and a check for binding or sticking. If the door binds, sticks or is out of balance it says to call a trained door systems technician, and never to loosen, move or adjust the door, springs, cables, pulleys or brackets yourself.

It also requires that any gap between the floor and the bottom of the door be no more than a quarter inch, or the safety reversal system may not work properly, and that the opener run on 120V 60Hz only. The opener goes above the centre of the door, or within four feet either side if a torsion spring or centre bearing plate is in the way of the header bracket.

One caution is easy to miss and expensive to ignore. The manual says fiberglass, aluminium or lightweight steel doors will require reinforcement before the door bracket is installed, that you should get the reinforcement instructions or kit from the door maker, and that failing to reinforce the top section as required may void the door's own warranty.

Bulbs, unattended close and a six-year motor warranty

Chamberlain's spec block says lighting is 100 watt with the bulb sold separately, and the manual narrows that further: A19 bulbs only, no incandescent above 100 watts, no compact fluorescent above 26 watts, no halogen and no short-neck or specialty bulbs. It warns that LED bulbs may cause remote control radio interference.

Unattended close has a hard rule. The manual states that the Timer-to-Close feature, the myQ app and myQ door monitors are all examples of unattended close and are to be used only with sectional doors, and that you must not install on a one-piece door if you intend to use them. It also repeats that the emergency release should be mounted at least six feet above the floor.

The warranty is short on everything except the motor, and both sources agree on it. Chamberlain lists six years on the motor, one year on parts, one year on the chain, one year on the drive, one year on the battery and one year on accessories, and the listing's warranty field matches. The printed terms exclude labor for reinstalling a repaired unit, consumables such as remote batteries and bulbs, non-residential installs, and anything to do with the door, its springs, rollers, alignment or hinges.
