What the Approach Z10 is
The Approach Z10 is Garmin's compact golf laser rangefinder, part number 010-04328-00, which matches both this listing and Garmin's product page. Garmin's page describes it as showing distance to the flag up to 350 yards with feedback in less than one second, and syncing the ranged distance to compatible devices.
The owner's manual gives two range figures. To the flag, it can measure up to 350 yards (320 metres). To a reflective surface, it measures from 7 to 1,200 yards. The listing adds 6x magnification and a weight of 6.3 ounces; we did not read those figures in a Garmin document.
Amazon's Included Components field lists the rangefinder, a carry case with a carabiner clip, a CR2 battery and documentation. The listing also describes a magnetic cart mount. Garmin's product page tabs for specs and box contents did not load when we read it, so confirm the mount and case against the box.
Measuring: press for three seconds, hold for eight
The manual describes two ways to range. A press measures for three seconds or until the unit locks onto the pin; holding the button measures actively for up to eight seconds. When the Z10 locks onto the pin it vibrates and shows the distance.
Garmin's accuracy notes are practical. Ambient light, weather, target reflectivity and size all affect ranging; bright sunlight and rain reduce range, overcast days and shiny targets extend it, and a target square-on to you ranges farther than one at a shallow angle. The manual suggests aiming at the flag rather than the pin.
The manual says the device goes to sleep after ten seconds. Setup mode, opened by holding MODE, changes the unit of measure and the display brightness.
What works alone and what needs a paired device
On its own the Z10 ranges and shows a PlaysLike distance that the manual says accounts for elevation change. Several features need a pairing. Distances from the pin to the front and back of the green only appear when the rangefinder is paired to the Garmin Golf app or a compatible Garmin device.
When connected to a compatible device, the manual says PlaysLike also takes in data from that device, such as wind and weather. The listing's range relay feature, which it describes as showing the ranged distance as an arc on your wrist, likewise depends on a paired device.
Pairing also brings software updates through the Garmin Golf app and Find My Garmin, according to the manual, which says Find My Garmin requires the app to be allowed to use your phone's location at all times.
Tournament mode and the blue light
Pressing MODE turns on tournament mode, which disables PlaysLike. The manual says that feature is not allowed during sanctioned tournaments. When tournament mode is on, an external LED on the rangefinder shows solid blue.
The same LED flashes blue while a firmware update is being applied. The manual topics we read describe no separate switch for this, so the MODE button changes the setting and the LED is how it is shown.
The manual's statement covers PlaysLike only. Check the rules of any event with its organiser before relying on the rangefinder there, including whether other features may be used.
Battery, weather and storage
Power is a CR2 battery. Garmin's specifications give battery life of up to one year, noting that actual life depends on feature use and conditions, and that the included battery is intended for initial functionality testing and may run down sooner than usual.
The water rating is IPX4, which the manual itself explains as protection against splashes of water. The operating range is 14 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The manual also says to check the battery gasket and compartment are free of debris when changing the battery.
For storage, the manual says to remove the battery if you will not use the device for several weeks and to keep it somewhere cool and dry. Its care notices warn against shock, sharp objects, chemical cleaners, solvents, insect repellents and extreme temperatures.
Warranty and who this suits
Garmin's Consumer Limited Warranty covers non-aviation products against defects in materials or workmanship for one year from purchase, with repair or replacement at Garmin's option and the customer paying transport. It excludes cosmetic damage, batteries, accident, misuse, water and unauthorised service, and repaired or replaced devices carry 90 days or the rest of the original term.
For US buyers, the warranty applies only to products bought from Garmin or a Garmin authorised reseller in the United States, and an original or copy of the sales receipt is required. Check the seller before relying on it. The manual adds that repair or service must be handled by authorised, factory-trained technicians.
The Z10 suits a golfer who already uses a Garmin golf watch or the Garmin Golf app and wants a small laser that feeds into it, with a visible tournament light. It suits you less if you want flag ranging beyond 350 yards, rain-proofing beyond splashes, or a rechargeable battery.
