What it is, and what Genie ships with it

This is a jackshaft opener: it mounts to the side of the door's torsion shaft instead of hanging from a rail on the ceiling. Genie's own store page and the listing agree on the identity, both giving model 6072H-O, UPC 050049023508 and SKU 41410Y, so there is no ambiguity about which unit you are buying.

Genie's store page says the kit comes with a wireless wall console, an LED light, a three-button remote and an automatic door lock. The listing's included components field lists the same four items plus the opener, though the listing describes the remote only as an Intellicode remote and its title says one remote.

Genie's page gives the unit as 6.8 inches wide, 14.5 inches tall and 9 inches deep. The listing's size field repeats those figures, but its separate product dimensions field says 12 inches tall instead of 14.5. Use Genie's figure and measure your own space before ordering.

The critical measurements that decide whether it fits

Genie publishes a dedicated pre-install document for models 6072 and 6172, and it is the thing to read before buying. It opens by saying critical measurements must be taken to ensure this opener will fit the intended door, and it lists six of them.

The opener will only fit torsion shafts, solid or tubular, of 1 inch diameter with or without a keyway. The distance from the torsion bar centreline to the wall must be between 2.5 and 6 inches. The torsion bar shaft must protrude no less than 2.25 inches from the bearing plate. The torsion bar centreline to the ceiling must be at least 2.25 inches, and the end of the torsion shaft to the side wall must be at least 7 inches.

The listing's own installation bullet compresses this into a single line, saying the opener only requires 2.5 inches above and 7 inches to the side of the door's spring tube. Genie's document says 2.25 inches for the ceiling clearance, so the two are close but not identical. Measure to the larger figure and you are safe either way.

The doors Genie says it will not work on

The pre-install document splits configurations into supported and unsupported, and the unsupported list is short and firm: one-piece doors, doors with extension springs, and low headroom setups with outside pickup. Genie lists no accessory that brings any of those three inside the supported set.

The supported list covers standard radius track, low headroom with a front mount spring on inside pickup only, high lift up to 84 inches, and vertical lift. The installation document adds the drum types Genie names for each: 4 to 6 inch drums or equivalent for standard lift, and specific APCO drum series for high lift and vertical lift doors.

The size envelope is the same in all three Genie documents. Residential sectional doors up to 850 pounds balanced weight, up to 18 feet wide and up to 14 feet tall, and not exceeding 180 square feet in total. The torsion bar must be 1 inch, solid or hollow 14 or 16 gauge tubular steel.

The outlet distance is stated three different ways

Every Genie document here agrees that you need a standard grounded outlet near the opener, and none of them agrees on how near. The listing bullet and Genie's store page both say a standard outlet within 6 feet of the opener.

The pre-install support document says a standard 115 volt AC grounded electrical outlet will be required within 5.5 feet of the bottom of the opener. The installation document says both: its critical measurements section repeats 6 feet, while its power requirements section says a standard 120 volt AC outlet will be required within 5 feet of the opener.

We are not going to guess which figure governs. The installation document does say what happens if there is no outlet in range: permanent wiring of the opener or an alternate power installation kit will be required, and it says not to use extension cords to power this opener. Measure to the shortest figure, 5 feet, or plan on the alternate power kit.

Drum settings, the Bluetooth light and the batteries

One setting is easy to overlook. The manual says drum selection is pre-programmed at the factory for 4 inch standard lift drums, and must be changed for standard or high lift drums greater than 4 inches in diameter and for vertical lift doors. It warns that altering the drum selection means the force profile sequence in the manual has to be performed again.

The light is a separate wireless fixture rather than a bulb in the powerhead. The installation document says the Bluetooth light kit is automatically detected by the opener, operates when the opener operates, and shuts off after four minutes unless overridden by the wireless wall console. The manual treats it as a portable luminaire with a polarized plug and says never to use it with an extension cord unless the plug can be fully inserted.

For batteries the manual is specific: the wall console takes two AAA cells, and the three-button remote's cell is printed in the manual as a CR2232. That is what the document says, so check the cell in your own remote against the one you buy.

Warranty rests on the listing, and the monthly checks

The listing's manufacturer warranty description gives a limited 15 year motor warranty and a 5 year parts warranty. Neither Genie's store page for this model nor the owner's manual states any warranty term at all, so those figures rest on the listing alone. Get them confirmed in writing by Genie or the seller before you buy.

The manual's maintenance schedule is monthly throughout: the contact reverse test, lubricating rollers and hinges with a light weight general purpose grease, a Safe-T-Beam check for loose connections, cracks or worn insulation with the lenses cleaned, a door balance check and a battery backup test where a backup is fitted. Remote batteries are changed as needed.

The manual also sets a door balance requirement, and where a door fails it the instruction is to contact a trained door system technician to have the springs serviced rather than to proceed. The manual warns against fitting photocells from other manufacturers as well.
