A 256 mm cube on a moving bed, not a boxed CoreXY
The A1 is Bambu Lab's open-frame model PF002-A, confirmed by the quick start guide attached to the listing. Its wiki describes a Cartesian motion system with a maximum print volume of 256 by 256 by 256 millimetres. The toolhead rides a linear rail on the X beam, the heatbed slides forward and back on a guide rail as the Y axis, and the Z axis uses dual lead screws driven through a synchronous belt.
That bed-slinger layout is why space planning matters more than the printer's own footprint. Amazon's table gives the machine as 21.76 by 20.83 by 12.87 inches and 22 pounds, but the wiki says to leave roughly 695 millimetres front to back so the heatbed can travel without hitting anything.
The frame is open. Bambu Lab's FAQ explicitly says it does not recommend enclosing the A1, so if your plan was to box it in for heat or noise, that is against the maker's own advice.
What it will and will not print, in the maker's own words
The wiki lists low-temperature filaments as the intended diet: PLA, PETG, TPU and their support materials. Maximum hotend temperature is 300 degrees Celsius and maximum heatbed temperature is 100 degrees Celsius, which is the headline constraint for anything engineering-grade.
On ABS and ASA the FAQ is direct. It says the open frame and lower chamber temperature reduce interlayer strength, raising warping risk on large models, so conventional high-temperature materials are not recommended for large or high-infill parts, though small low-infill parts can work. It adds that ABS and ASA release harmful and irritating gases and recommends not printing them on the A1 unless the room is well ventilated and people are at a distance.
The nozzle fitted at the factory is 0.4 mm stainless steel. Bambu Lab says not to run filaments containing hard particles through it, naming PLA-CF and GF, glow-in-the-dark PLA, PETG-CF and GF and PAHT-CF and GF, and says a hardened steel nozzle is required for those. Hardened steel nozzles are sold separately.
Multi-colour is an extra purchase, and it caps at four
The Amazon bullet states plainly that AMS lite is required for multi-colour printing and that you need the A1 Combo or a separately bought AMS lite. This listing is the printer alone, so out of the box it is a single-filament machine with a user-installed spool holder that the wiki says comes in the accessories.
If you add AMS lite, the wiki says the A1 supports only one unit, which means a maximum of four colours. A second AMS lite is not an option Bambu Lab describes. Connecting a full AMS instead requires a separate AMS Hub accessory.
Space planning changes again with AMS lite. Bambu Lab recommends 50 millimetres between the printer and the unit to keep PTFE tube resistance down, and says mounting AMS lite on the crossbeam brings the total height to roughly 80 centimetres. Measure your shelf height before committing to the beam mount.
Calibration, monitoring and the automatic routines
The A1 probes the bed with an eddy current sensor in the hotend and builds a height map from 49 points on a seven-by-seven grid, then adjusts Z during the print. Bambu Lab recommends leaving auto bed levelling enabled for every job rather than switching it off, so the probing routine is part of every print rather than a one-time setup step.
Resonance compensation uses accelerometers on the X axis and the heatbed to find the resonance modes and cancel them in the motion controller. Flow dynamics calibration measures how the filament actually flows through this nozzle with this spool, which the wiki says is comparable to pressure advance in Klipper. Active motor noise cancelling generates counter-vibration in the motors, and the FAQ gives roughly 48 dB in silent mode.
An integrated camera handles remote monitoring, time-lapse and defect detection, and the wiki notes it has no night vision but does have an LED to light the part. Filament runout is caught by a hall sensor, and with AMS lite the printer can switch to a backup spool. Printing resumes after a power loss and the printer can auto-recover from a step loss.
Connectivity, the microSD card, and running it off the cloud
Slicing is done in Bambu Studio, with monitoring and control through Bambu Studio or the Bambu Handy app. The wiki's LAN mode page covers A series printers and describes a LAN Only Mode reached from the third settings page, after which you bind the printer to Bambu Studio with an access code shown on its screen.
LAN Only Mode is a genuine offline option but it costs you features. Bambu Lab lists what stops working: you cannot start prints remotely from outside the local network, the Bambu Handy app is not available, and Print History is not available. Decide which of those you need before you buy if account-free operation is a requirement.
One detail is worth knowing before you buy. The FAQ says the A1 has no built-in memory, so a microSD card must be inserted to send a print at all. A 32 GB card comes pre-installed, cards up to 2TB work if formatted by the printer, and losing that card means losing the ability to print.
Power, running costs and the maintenance the maker names
Bambu Lab gives power figures at a 220V input: about 5 watts idle and an average of 95 watts while printing PLA, rising while the nozzle or bed is heating. The recommended room conditions are 10 to 30 degrees Celsius and under 85 percent humidity, so check the room you plan to put it in against those figures.
Named maintenance in the wiki includes lubricating the X-axis linear rail, the Y-axis guide rail and idler wheels with the supplied lubricant oil, and using the separate grease only on the lead screws and extruder wheels. Bambu Lab states it is strictly prohibited to put grease on the X-axis linear rail, and specifies oil rather than grease on the Y guide rail.
Other recurring items are the silicone wiper components on the heatbed, which the wiki calls a routine replacement part, the textured PEI build plate, which is the only plate Bambu Lab recommends for this machine, and the nozzle itself. Belt tension is monitored by the printer across three adjustable tensioners, so re-tensioning is a job you should expect to do.
